Administrators’ Corner: A Conversation with Sharon Brown
Robert Wood Johnson UniversityHospital (RWJUH) Hamilton, thehospital for which Bedside Harp
®
was initially created, has been host-ing our programs since February2002. Recently, Founding Director Edie Elkan sat down with SharonBrown, Acting Vice President of  Nursing at RWJUH Hamilton to talk about her experiences with our pro-grams and our work.Sharon began the conversation by complimenting Edie for her inno-vative and groundbreaking creationof Bedside Harp. What was espe-cially meaningful to her is our certi-fication program’s strong educa-tional foundation. Both our class-room and clinical hours, Sharonstated, “sets our program apart fromother programs of its kind.” Shenoted that our training empowersharp therapists to handle situationsthey may encounter and helps themcollaborate with staff to create atherapeutic environment.Sharon sees many benefits tothe collaboration between the hospi-tal and Bedside Harp. For one thing, the harpists help set the tone for a positive healing environment. Andfor another, because harp therapy isa new concept and a new field, it provides opportunities for clinicalresearch. No other programs thatSharon knows about work with hos- pital Institutional Review Boards(IRBs) to develop quality-based re-search projects like the ones thathave been conducted in Hamilton.During a 2003 study at the Cancer Institute, Sharon says, “it was re-markable to see the impact on pa-tients and the healing process” of theharp music.“Bedside Harp also positivelyimpacted patient satisfaction at thehospital,” Sharon noted. The hospitaltakes pride in excellence in service, measuring it in a variety of ways:inpatient services, emergency room, outpatient services and ambulatorycare. All of these areas have bene-fited from our Bedside Harp pro-gram. Sharon went on to say thatfeedback from patients on the bene-fits they receive from individual liveharp therapy sessions have always been positive. In fact, upon admis-sion, some patients even ask for harptherapy. Sharon believes that the benefits of harp music throughoutthe hospital are not limited to pa-tients, however, as our music has a profound impact on doctors, nursesand other staff as well.Sharon recalls witnessing thedirect impact of harp therapy on a patient who was newly diagnosedand needed a procedure. Harp musiccame through the hallways, creatinga cradle of sound. The harp therapistnever even entered the room, butstood outside the door as she played.Immedi-ately, theenviron-mentchanged,the stresslevels low-ered andthe patientwas able toconsider and agree to the procedure. After successful surgery and recovery, the patient commented that everything“completely changed when the harptherapist played.” She was able tode-stress, listen and decide. This incident was just one of many testaments to our work. Sharonis proud of the RWJ Hamilton asso-ciation with our innovative field andthe collaborative partnerships BedsideHarp offers. She recognizes thetrained and competent harp therapistswho come to her facility and the criti-cal role they play in healing patientsin a holistic way. Consumers continueto request harp therapy, so the hospi-tal continues to include this importantservice.Bedside Harp has produced aDVD of interviews of our host hos- pital administrators talking aboutthe differences our program andwork make in their facilities. For afree copy of this DVD, please con-tact shannon@bedsideharp.com.
