Barely a day goes by withouthearing the words ‘Muslim’, ‘Islam’or ‘Jihaad’ from the media. In factone would guess that the vastmajority of people have heard suchterms from the media or fromfriends or family. However, have you ever asked yourself what theseterms really mean? Have you goneout and spent some time to researchabout these Muslims and what they  believe in?Perhaps you may think that thesepeople are all foreigners andtherefore have no bearing on yourlife. Well, you may be surprisedthen if I were to tell you that thereare up to 3 million Muslims livingon your doorstep in the UnitedKingdom; from the furthest southof Lands End to remote areas innorthern Scotland. You may not feelthis a strong enough reason to goout and read about Islam; however,do you not feel at least a littleignorant when you hear itmentioned on the television or onthe radio?It is for this purpose that we haveprovided you with this shortpamphlet about Islam, Muslims andall that you may wish to know aboutthem. We hope that you find theinformation beneficial and usefuland encourage you to make contact with the authors if you wish tofurther your understanding of Islamor correct any misconceptions youmay have about it.
Islam
Islam is the world’s fastest growingdivine way of life with around 1.3 billion adherents worldwide. Fromcountries ranging far a field as America to Zimbabwe, Muslims can be found on all continents of theglobe. A Muslim is someone who believes in and adheres to a way of life known as Islam.

Islam is an Arabic word whichliterally means ‘submission’. TheIslamic faith was revealed to the lastand final Messenger Muhammad(saw) from Allaah (lit. God) in thedeserts of Arabia some 1400 yearsago; and was a continuation of theJudaeo-Christian religions thatpreceded it. In fact Islam came as arectification for both the Jewish andChristians scriptures since overtime they had undergone numerouschanges and additions from theiroriginal revealed form. The editorsof the Revised Standard Version of the Bible 1971 comment in theirintroduction to the RSV Bible,
“The King James Version has withgood reason been termed, ‘thenoblest monument of Englishprose’. Its revisers in 1881expressed admiration for itssimplicity, its dignity, its power, itshappy turns of expression.’ Itentered, as no other book has, intothe making of the personalcharacter and the publicinstitutions of the English-speakingpeoples. We owe to it anincalculable debt.
Yet the King James Version has gravedefects.
By the middle of the 19thCentury, the development of Biblical studies and the discovery of many manuscripts more ancientthan those upon which the KingJames Version was based,
made imanifest that these defects areso many and so serious as tocall for revision of the Englishtranslation.
The Islamic way of life is centredaround the belief in a single Creatorknown as Allaah; this is oftentranslated as God in English. Somemay think that in this day and ageof science, technology anddevelopment, it is old-fashioned to believe in a God or a Creator.Others seem to think that the theory of evolution and geneticengineering have made the need forGod redundant. In fact the evidenceof a Creator is all around us and weneed only take one look at ourselvesto come to this conclusion.
