,I reached for a set of papers, notes and collection from Dalton Trumbo’s film “JohnnyGot His Gun”, tha
t could be the most powerful anti-
war film yet made. This morning I’m re
-reading, re-thinking and have decided to post some photos, reviews, memories and links of "Johnny Got His Gun" and Dalton Trumbo that spring back to life as I look back and recollect.Method acting
think of Brando’s “On the Waterfront.” Or back to Strasberg, Stanislavski.Recently Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln, when he didn’t come out of character and spoke every
day for months as he envisioned Lincoln speaking. His wife said it was difficult, especially sinceevery one of his roles, and three Oscars, had him becoming the characters he played. We think of actors doing the Method to a greater or lesser degree when they get into their roles, but have youthought what happens to writers when they live their creations? Consider it for a moment andconsider what Cleo Trumbo said about her husband living the role of Johnny and the charactersthat came from Dalton's mind. Consider what he wrote -- and later explained attempting toexplain those who do not have empathy, who do not or cannot feel the damage they do to others, the sociopaths and psychopaths who are all about themselves and do not deal w/ consequences of their behavior, men and women missing something deep.
