The Fox School o Business strives tofnd innovative ways to raise the qualityo learning to new levels. In 1999, theschool became one o the frst in thenation to adopt Blackboard’s eLearningsolution. “Blackboard made it possible orus to create our frst eLearning programand oer our entire MBA curriculumonline,” says John DeAngelo, AssociateDean o IT or the Fox School o Business. As the program grew, however, the schoolwanted to create a more interactive,collaborative experience or its onlinestudents. “To raise the quality o theprogram, we needed our online coursesto capture the same energy as our liveclassrooms,” says DeAngelo. To fnd the right online collaboration tool, The Fox School researched and evaluatedseveral solutions, including Wimba, Adobe Acrobat Connect, the Echo360System,and Microsot Ofce Live Meeting. “Weused Adobe Connect or a while andhosted it on campus,” says DeAngelo.“But i more than fve o-campus studentsaccessed the system, it would crash.Live Meeting also limited the numbero participants and did not oer high-quality VoIP.”

Ater a long search, The Fox School o Business fnally ound WebEx. DeAngelorecalls, “We knew that WebEx was widelyaccepted by the business community. This was an important actor or us.” The school also chose WebEx becauseit provided highly interactive tools,supported large numbers o usersreliably, and was very easy to use. As the primary aculty memberspearheading the interactive eLearningeort, Darin Kapanjie, Faculty Coordinatoro Fox Online Initiatives, was the frst touse WebEx Training Center. To makethe interaction in his online businesscalculus classes exactly the same ashis in-person courses, Kapanjie secureda grant that provides each student witha VoIP headset, a Wacom tablet, and awebcam. “WebEx enables me to share mynotes and sample problems in MicrosotOfce OneNote with the students online,”he says. Using their tablets and digital pens,students handwrite their calculations.Kapanjie explains, “I use the WebEx passcontrol eature to enable students toshare their desktops, showing me andthe rest o the class how they arrived at asolution. Students complete and submithandwritten exams through WebEx aswell.” In addition, WebEx Training Centerbreakout capabilities make it possible orKapanjie to split his classes o 25 intosmaller groups to work collaboratively. Today, Kapanjie ully utilizes the robustcapabilities o WebEx technology. “Iuse WebEx Network-Based Recordingto capture every class and then post therecordings on Blackboard. This makes itpossible or students to review as oten asthey need to,” he says. Kapanjie also relieson WebEx VoIP. “Most students don’thave land lines these days.
