Last Wednesday we began the season of Lent. As Catholics, we areinvited to reflect on our lives and then discern what disciplines we shouldtake on during this season to make us better. The word discipline anddisciple are of course closely related. In Webster’s Dictionary we see theyboth come from the same root “discere”, to learn.Discipline is defined as training expected to produce a specific pattern ofbehavior, especially moral or mental improvement. A disciple is defined asone who believes and helps disseminate the teachings of a Master, for usof course that Master is Christ. As we begin this season of Lent it might be well for us to reflect on how wediscerned within ourselves what, if any, disciplines we would take on duringthis Lent, and how we saw them as helping us to become better. Thedisciplines of course carry the full range of something we do to somethingwe, for example, give up.At all times of course the disciplines we embrace should carry with them thereality of the cross, and today especially, the cross invites us to have thecourage to acknowledge the truth, and the truth states there is such a realityas right and wrong, a right and wrong that is not determined by poles orlaws but by God. In this season of Lent, as disciples of Christ, we shouldcome to recognize that being politically correct does not measure up.As a congressman once replied when asked about his attitude towardwhiskey, “If you mean the demon drink that poisons the mind, pollutes thebody, desecrates family life, and inflames sinners, then I’m against it. But ifyou mean the elixir of Christmas cheer, the shield against winter chill, thetaxable potion that puts needed funds into public coffers to comfort littlecrippled children, then I’m for it. This is my position, and I will notcompromise.”The season of Lent calls us to a little more clearer discernment then thecongressman, and for greater decision making.
Rev. Msgr. Hugh Marren, Pastor
