Re: Presentation to Mayor and Council
Healthier Community Partnerships
Your Worship and Council;
We are respectfully requesting an opportunity to provide a presentation to Mayor and
Council at the upcoming Special Council Meeting on March 9, 2009 scheduled to begin at
4:00 p.m.
We are seeking Council's endorsement to have the Township of Langley and the City of
Langley work together on an exciting new initiative entitled Healthier Community
Partnerships. This initiative has the potential to exist in communities across the
province enabling them to help build healthy, strong and vibrant places to live, work and
play. :
In order to effect the systematic changes needed to improve and sustain community
health, community capacity needs to be built (resources, knowledge, skills, participation
and leadership) to address the local issues and concerns, Factors determining overall
‘community health include social, economic, environmental, education and safety issues, in
addition to access to appropriate health care services.
In September, following a presentation by Dr. Nigel Murray, CEO of Fraser Health, the
Fraser Health Municipal Government Advisory Council (comprised of 20 mayors from Hope
to Burnaby) recommended the development of local Healthier Community Partnerships as
a collaborative venture to improve the health, well being and quality of life of BC Citizens.
The Steering Council, comprised of key stakeholders such as representatives from the
business community, police, environmental, social, and economic groups would seek to
understand local community issues, recognize opportunities and recommend solutions for
short and long-term health outcomes.
Sincerely; { \
