The hygienic practices cover the appropriategeneral techniques for collecting drinkingwater, its treatment, bottling, packaging,storage, transport, distribution and sale fordirect consumption, so as to guarantee a safehealthy and whole some product.
B-2 HYGIENE PRESCRIPTIONS FORCOLLECTION OF DRINKING WATER
B-2.1 Extraction or Collection
In the case of extraction or collection of waterintended for packaging from ground watersources, it should be ensured that it is safefrom pollution, whether caused by naturaloccurrence or actions or neglect or ill-will.It may be ensured that the groundwater source is reasonably away fromany polluting source like drain/ sewer/ septic tank. Ground water source(whether owned/shared) shall beunder the direct control andsupervision of the manufacturer. Firmshall ensure that the ground watersource is safe from pollution either bynatural occurrence or because ofaction/ neglect/ ill-will shall be taken.

If water to be processed for packing isobtained from any other potable source itshould be protected from its beingcontaminated.The Firm shall ensure that the sourceshould be protected and free from anycontamination.
B-2.3
The firms using waters from drinkingwater systems intended for packaging, shouldensure that it meets the requirements of thestandard.The Firm shall ensure that the waterused for packaging conforms to IS10500
B-2.4 Materials
The pipes, pumps or other possible devicescoming into contact with water and used for itscollection should be made of such material thatthey do not change the quality of water.The material used in pipes, pumps orother devices come into contact withwater shall be such which does notchange the quality of the productwater.
B-3 PROTECTIVE MEASURESB-3.1
All possible precautions should be takenwithin the protected perimeter to avoid anypollution of, or external influence on, the qualityof the ground or surface water. Preventivemeasures should be taken for disposal ofliquid, solid or gaseous waste that could pollutethe ground or surface water. Drinking waterresources should not be in the path of potentialsource of underground contamination.The surrounding of the source wateroutlet should be completely coveredwith pucca construction to avoidcontamination due to ingress ofexternal causes. If it is at ground levelthen it should be covered with at least30 cm high boundary wall.
B-3.2 Protection of the Area of Origin
The immediate surroundings of the extractionor collection area should be protected bylimiting access to authorized persons only.Wellheads and spring outflows should beprotected by a suitable structure to prevententry by unauthorized individuals, pests andother sources of extraneous matter.Outlets of bore well/ well headsshould be tightly covered and locked.Units should prevent entries ofindividuals, pests and other sourcesof extraneous matter to the immediatesurroundings of source of water.
