GUIDELINES FOR PROJECT EVALUATOR The purpose of an evaluation is to help the speaker to be less self-conscious and a better speaker. An evaluation will fill the speaker in on what, you as a listener, feeland think. Remember that the speaker has taken hours to prepare the speech. Goodevaluations may enthuse the members and bad evaluations may dishearten memberswho are trying their best.PRIOR TO THE MEETING1) Review carefully the Effective Speech Evaluation manual, which you received inyour new member kit.2) Carefully read the project description and objectives2) Talk with the speaker, review the goals of the speech, what the speaker hopes toachieve and any skill/technique which the speaker wants you to focus on.UPON ARRIVAL AT THE MEETING1) Look for the speaker and get his /her manual.20Check again with speaker if there is any specific area which he/she likes you togive feedback on.DURING THE MEETING1) Record the impressions of the speech in the manual along with answers to theevaluation questions. Be as objective as possible. Listen carefully to the speaker bylooking at the speaker and mirroring the speaker’s feelings. Do not let your mindwander or become distracted.2) When introduced by the Toastmaster of the Evening, walk to the lectern and shakehands with the TME. Greet as follows: “Madam President, Area Governor,Toastmaster… Honoured Guests, Fellow Toastmasters, Ladies and Gentlemen.3) Begin and end your speech with a note of encouragement or praise.Talk specifically on the impact of the speech on you.Talk specifically about what you liked.The oral evaluation time is limited. Possibly cover one point on organization, one ondelivery and one on whether the speech meets the objectives.Emphasize the speaker’s strong points.Be gentle with your delivery of recommendations for improvement.In a nutshell-Say what you mean and mean what you say and don’t be mean whenyou say it.AFTER THE MEETING1)Return the manual to the speaker. Add a verbal word of encouragement to thespeaker, something that was not mentioned in the oral evaluation. NOV05
