“I
would race Lasers, but I don’t wantto swim in the Bay.” I swallowedthe would-be racer’s words like a big gulpo mid-summer Bay muck, knowing— without really knowing—which way his bigboat discharge Y-valve was pointing. How is it that sailors have such adisconnectbetween what we doon the waterand what wedo to protectthe quality o the water and surroundingenvironment? It is shocking, i undeniable, because sailing is ostensibly an environ-mentallyconsciousactivity.Regardless o  whether you buy into the green movementzeitgeist, as boaters we are all commonpartners in a cleaner healthier Bay, and when the only sound our boats make tear-ing across the Bay is the sloshing gurgle our wind-blown wakes, it is easy to eellike Al Gore’s got nothing on us. Divedeeper, and we are all a little complicitin a smudged reality that is as murky asBaltimore Harbor. Some dayecycledaterials will be usedto build our sails, our iron genoas will allbe bio-diesel, plug-in jet drives, and thoseotting old boats in the weedy corners o ur marina acilities will all dissolve intoBay grass and oyster rees, but as withost things good, there are some very dirty aspects to our passion.Omariin pahavea long way to go beore any green,or “blue,” moniker can be taken seri-ously.Here is the positive part: marinasand yacht yards are great starting pointsor sailors andther boaters tostart contribut-ing more to Bay conservation. Tink about what marinas really represent: pump-outs,bottom jobs, paints, cleaners, polishes, oil, diesel, gas, noxious cleaners, waxes, andmore. Yuck. Don’t think about it or toolong because you might come to the con-clusion that the problem is too much, toooverwhelming, too gross to address.
“Sailing is ostensibly an environmentallyconsciousactivity. Re-gardless of whether you buy into the green movement zeitgeist, asboaters we are all common partners in a cleaner healthier Bay…”

Tere is hope.Maryland and Vir-ginia both have programs that are helpingacilities improve using established bestpractices and also guiding boaters to theacilities that are addressing the biggest en- vironmental concerns.Tere is plenty we asindividual sailors can do to do our part tokeep the Bay the treasure we all know it is. Te Maryland Department o NaturalResources manages a program, the CleanMarina Initiative, that ofers marina andboatyard operators, along with boatersthemselves, the opportunity to partici-pate in eforts to protect the Bay’s naturalresources. Te Maryland Clean Marina Initiativerecognizes and promotes marinas, boat- yards, and yacht clubs o any size that meetlegal requirements and voluntarily adoptpollution prevention practices. While theirgoal to qualiy 25 percent o Maryland’s600 marinas as “clean” is still just over thehorizon, they are providing a service ormarinas and clubs as well as an inorma-tive and useul site or boaters.Individualscan nd inormation about what they cando to contribute at

.Virginia’s program, while similar toMaryland’s, is an ofshoot o a national a liation o states and acilities and is part o the NOAA Sea Grant program.o date, they have more than 60 registered acilities(out o 1000 acilities in Virginia alone). Both programs are voluntary and work by exchanging endorsement by the pro-gram or state or adoption o measures thatprevent or reduce pollution rom tradition-al and non-traditional marinas, boatyards, and recreational boats.Given the shortalls that grander Bay clean-up eforts have seen in recent years, some are dubious that a voluntary programcan realize meaningul results and cleanermarinas; managers o participating acili-ties beg to difer.Manager o registeredClean Marina, Port Annapolis, Scott inkler says, “We are so dependent on the water and these resources that it is in ourpersonal and business interest to keep the water and Bay ecosystem clean.”n contrast to big multi-lateral clean-upplans, cleaning up marinas is something which individual boaters can easily do andenjoy the benets o immediately.TeMaryland program, now more than adecade old, has evolved rom a loose col-laboration between a ew pioneering acili-ties and a state agency to an established

program that provides best practices and guidanceor acilities and individual boaters. Tere is evena Maryland State Senate Bill, S. 240, which couldprovide signicant unding or acilities that are look-ing to expand their clean initiatives.More marina acilities could be green and “clean.”ccording to inkler, the steps are airly easy, andthe costs balance out.“We use available technology to stop things rom getting to the water during boatmaintenance and use ewer products to do the same jobs… We are dependent on the Bay or our liveli-hood, so we need to lead the way.Tat’s the respon-sibility o a business like ours.” Te process o becoming a “Clean Marina” begins when acilities contact the state managing authority and take steps to pledge to be clean—a low barrier toentry. Increasing public interest in environmentally sensitive practices should mean that more acilities will take the simple steps to become Clean Marinas.Phoning your marina acility manager will quickly conrm whether your acility participates in the pro-gram and sends a clear message that their participa-tion is important to you.Ofering to dock-mates tocollect and dispose o items such as old paintand varnish, batteries, and oily rags at yourcommunity clean-up day can go a long way
