The Grey Lady

Boo! Did I scare you? Ask anyone who's not a come-from-away and they'll tell you: the East Coast of Canada is a haunted place. One such ghost story is the Grey Lady of Annapolis Royal. In the mid-nineteenth century a merchant sea captain took on mistresses in each port he came calling in far away from home. Once, he brought a mistress back with him. Fearing his wife and children would discover his infidelity, the sailor panicked. The captain took the woman into a dory and beheaded her in the waters off Digby Gut, throwing her body overboard. She wore grey. Legend had it that from there after she could be seen haunting Stoney Beach. A reverend and his wife were horse backing riding when they encountered her. They tried to follow her but she disappeared. The priest returned many times without sighting her again while being sure his horse could still see her ghost. Similar stories abound. Whether fact or fiction, the Grey Lady reveals the Maritimes superstitious side. Some myths last generations while others fade away, like the Grey Lady herself. But perhaps she's not gone at all, and you may happen upon her on a cold wet beach, some dark night along the shore. Jonathan Rotsztain
