Protrack Anti-Poaching Officer mauled to death by lioness
In the recent few weeks disastrousevents unfolded resulting in the tragicloss of life. One of Protrack’s seasonedanti-poaching veterans was killed onduty when he was dragged from hiscamp by a lioness. This event was thecause of great shock,

sadness andanger from the family and friends of thedeceased and members of Protrackalike. It quickly made nation wide newsfollowed by speculation of how thiscould happen. The matter has beenthoroughly investigated by the SAPS,Nature conservation authorities and thevarious stake holders. The fact remainshowever that is was a tragic accidentthat happened in a potentiallydangerous work environment and couldhave happened to anybody in the samesituation. It is unconstructive to try to allocateblame after the fact, yet adherence tothe set guidelines and training given tothe employees who work in theseconditions would likely have preventedthis disaster. Protrack employees areput through stringent trainingmethodologies to deal with working inareas containing dangerous game. They have to rely on their wit, commonsense and training to keep them out of harm’s way and as a last resort, afirearm, which every team is issued before being dispatched onto their post.

We pass our condolences to the familyof the victim and a word of warning toall in the same working conditions tolearn from this incident and not letcomplacency or familiarityunnecessarily put them in harms way.Jaques, our resident trainee helicopter pilot was flying in a helicopter in theWhite River Area when a daggaplantation was spotted from the air.Arrangements were subsequently madewith the landowner to gain entrance intothe property. The team removed a totalof 400 plants with a value of roughlyR 20,000.00. The dagga was handed inat the police station.Protrack guards were subjected tobeing held ransom while an ATMbombing was orchestrated by a heavilyarmed gang in the Acorn Hoek area.Similarly, in the same area, our guardwas held up while firearms weredemanded from him. The securityenvironment by its very nature ishazardous and the security personnelput their lives on the line to make aliving. It is not always appreciated whatdanger these people subjectthemselves to until something goeshorribly wrong.

Tumi Morema was overjoyed in receiving his first ever vehicle that he now uses inhis new position as Guernsey area anti-poaching manager.
This promotion is well deserved asTumi since he joined the company in2003 has distinguished himself in activeduty. From meagre beginnings his initialtraining was complimented with avariety of courses and modules as heprogressed in his work. These includethe mandatory first aid levels, firearmtraining, parachuting and our arduous“clandestine patrol” course lasting 49days.His duty record features numerousachievements and arrests. Tumi hasproven himself to be one of Protrack’selite.
