This interview pertains to File #08-197. it is a death investigation, involving uh, victim, Max Gilpin, uh, that occurred uh...I'm sorry...at which time he fell ill uh, during football practice on August 20th, 2008. Uh, this interview is being conducted at uh, at the parking lot of Pleasure Ridge Park High School at 5601 Greenwood Road. This interview is of Mr. Steven Ellis.

Okay. Mr. uh, Ellis, we talked about the uh, uh...what you observed on, on August 20th, during the practice of PRP football team. At this time, can you elaborate on the uh, sequences of events in which you observed while present?

Ellis

Okay. I arrived at the uh, practice field area around 4 pm that day. Uh, I noticed the uh, football team was just walkin' across the parking lot, taking the field at around 4. Uh, from that point on, they went to their stretches

and calisthenics...and their practice started somewhere around 4:30'ish. That's where they went to the different individual team or individual drills and things like that. Uh, from that point on, after they went through a couple different uh, sections of practice, somewhere around 5:15'ish or so, uh, they had taken a water break and they went to what I believe is like uh, seven on seven, or whatever, and it was at that point that uh, I was helping Bobby Deacon with the freshmen, do a type of passing drill. I was over there workin' 'em on the sidelines. At around 5:24, uh, Coach uh, Stinson uh, told 'em to line up, uh, which, which we had to stop what we were do in' and, and line up on the sidelines where they started running. Uh, they ran...the specialty kids ran, which are backs, ran with one group, and the linemen ran the second group. One group went and came back, then the other group went. Uh, somewhere around, roughly around uh, 5:50 pm, uh, player Dave West was helping Antonio Calloway up the sidelines, and had placed him on the bottom seat of the uh, bench underneath the tree. At that point, I had been watching the freshmen run, keep an eye on them, I'd left them and went and got Mr. Calloway up to his feet and I took him over to the water fountain to where I got him to cool down and I got his breathing to slow down. He was basically havin' a hard time breathing, sounded like an asthmatic...uh, where I got, I got...cooled him down, got him to breathe in his nose and out his mouth, through several attempts, finally his breathing was down to semi close to normal. Uh, after he could tell me his name and phone number and address, I was walking him back over to the tree, at roughly right close to six.

Uh, at that point, I noticed there was a player out there with wobbly legs, out around the 30 to 40-yard line, and it was uh, uh...and there was two players helping him. I sat Antonio down on the bench, walked over, and spoke very briefly, pro'bly less than a minute, to the freshmen, and as I was talking to them, as I scanned back across the field, is when I noticed a player going down. Uh, I had also noticed that the AD, Craig Webb, was taking the cart, the John Deer Gater out to them. Uh, I headed for the player. Uh, when I got there, there was uh, a couple of other adults there who I learned later who they were...the individual was uh, so sweaty we had a hard time picking 'im up. Uh, Mr. Cowan made the comment, let's do a farmer's basket. We scooped underneath of him and we picked him up and we put him in the right-hand seat of the John Deer Gater. Uh, he was trying, he was sliding in the seat, I jumped in the back of the bed and reached both my arms...one through each armpit, and kinda hooked him to hold him up in the gaiter in the seat, so he wouldn't' slide out or fall. At that point, I told the athletic director, Craig Webb, to get me to the water hose. He drove immediately from that point to the, to the uh, right side of the uh, of the, of the drinking area. As soon as we arrived, I told Craig to hold on to him, I jumped out of the bed, I disconnected the water hose from the water trough, come around the other side of the gater, and at that point there, I immediately started to cool down the back of uh, Mr. Gilpin's head. Uh, from that point on, I stayed with Mr. Gilpin, taking the hose and cooling his head down, his neck...both sides of his neck, his chest, everywhere I could cool, uh, through that point
