Ali:
“Thank you for allowing me to ask you a few questions on open sourcesoftware. I’ll just get straight to the point. My first question is:
how are opensource software solutions used in the business environment?”
Mehmet:
“Currently, the largest area is in the servers. Many people are notaware, but many of the websites on the web are hosted by Linux or UNIXservers. Apache servers have been out there for a long time. Many of themail servers have also been Linux, and have been out there, sitting for a longtime. Lately there has been more and more use of Linux in home systems.Open source applications such as Open Office have also become more andmore popular. Even one of the softwares that everyone uses, the Mac (OS)Operating System is based on open source software. Also, many of the largecorporations, many countries in Africa, as well as certain states in Europeand India, are switching to Linux\UNIX and to make computers moreaccessible and to save money.”
Ali:
“Thank you. The second question I’d like to ask is:
why do you think the PC distribution of Linux has not been as successful asMicrosoft’s Windows?”

Kilinc 1
Mehmet:
“That’s easy. Microsoft has a lot of resources, and to be honestwith you, Microsoft products are: easy to use, they are very popular, andthey also have great marketing tools. And since Linux is open-source there’sreally not one organization that’s behind it, there are
so
many differentflavors of Linux. So, one distribution is not the same as another distribution, and it is not as easy to use as Windows. Some of them are maybe as close tobeing as easy to use as Windows, like Ubuntu or Fedora and so on, but still,it’s just not been popular. Plus, the PC manufacturers have not supportedLinux. Companies like Dell, Compaq and HP have not really supported Linux. They always bundle their hardware (computers) with the Windows operatingsystem.”
Ali:
“Thank you. The third question I’d like to ask you is:
what types of open-source software do you recommend for “every-day” PCusers?”
Mehmet:
“I think that
everybody
can use the Open Office. Open Office isan open-source product, and it will open, and work with almost all theWindows Office applications. It can read your regular Word and Excel files, and it costs nothing. Its zero cost. I even recommend it to many of my smallbusiness customers. I tell them, “you know, instead of spending three to fourhundred dollars on the Microsoft Office, just download and use Open Officefor free.” They can do basic changes, reading and so on, and then they could
save
their documents as their regular Windows products, and then theycould use that way as well. Now, for more advanced users, I would alsorecommend them to try and use the Linux operating system. Even for someof the older PCs, which cannot handle the new versions of Windows, thereare “live CDs” where you can boot the computer directly from it. Then youcan have some use out of the hardware without installation or anything. If the person only wants to go on the internet, and do basic documentprocessing and so on, they can use one of the “live CDs” to boot and go ontothe internet and so on.”
Ali:
“Thank you. The fourth question I’d like to ask is:
what types of open-source software do you personally use on a daily basis?”
Mehmet:
“Since I’m an IT professional, and I teach Information Security andso on, in my home, I have many PCs: I have Macs, I have Windows XP PCs,Windows Vista PCs, I have a server, I have a Linux PC, so I just don’t use one(type of) product, but I use all different products. I do use Linux, I use theFedora operating system, but I do have Helix, which is a different version of Linux, which I use for computer forensics. I use Open Office on some of my
