The King Center is making significant progress in our long-rangemission to spread the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. to a broader, global constituency. In addition, we have made dramatic improvementin the Center’s capacity to coordinate the efforts of my husband’sfollowers in the U.S. and around the world to help fulfill his Dream.

Despite the great victories of the Civil Rights Movement under MartinLuther King, Jr., many obstacles remain before his dream can befulfilled, including high rates of child poverty, AIDS, the death penalty, domestic, community and international violence, declining educationalopportunities and many forms of racism, bigotry and discrimination, toname just a few. Clearly, the philosophy and methods of KingianNonviolence remain our best hope for addressing these crises, and TheKing Center's role in promoting my husband's teachings can have aprofound impact on the kind of future we create for our young peopleand future generations. As the King Center's programs have been refined over the years toaccommodate changing times, our dedication to building the BelovedCommunity of his great Dream remains undiminished. Indeed, underthe leadership of our Chairman Dexter Scott King, The King Center hasmet this challenge with an energetic dedication to reach young peopleand to help prepare them for leadership in the struggle againstpoverty, racism, war and violence in the spirit and tradition of MartinLuther King, Jr. It was imperative that The King Center develop the capability tosustain programs which address the distressed conditions of humanityin this globalized world.
