Memories of my days as aFar East Prisoner of War in Java
 
1. Early Days
 
I was born in Holberrow Green,Worcestershireon December 11th 1916. I had seven brothersand six sisters and one more that died as aninfant. The eldest, Harry (Thomas Henry), waskilled in the First World War.I went to school in Inkberrow, a larger village oneand half miles away. There were about 80children and three teachers.I left school when I was fourteen and started towork on the local farms. I then helped on the milkround and when I was sixteen they wanted me tohelp milking which meant starting at half pastfive. I went once and then went up to AstwoodBank to get a job in the factories. I was paidabout 10 pence an hour compared to about 8pence on the farms.It was only a new place that had started up and itdidn't last long. I then went to Smiths on thehosiery department and eventually I got put onto"piece work" and the secretary did not agree andwouldn't pay me the wages I had earned so themanager told me to go down to the Batteries and
