he Public Affairs Ministry kicked
off 2013 with the rst of series of 
seminars on the environment andthe community’s role in keeping it healthy and sustainable forgenerations to come.In his welcomestatement, Public Affairs Ministry adviser, Fr. Jojo Monissaid that part of being agood Christian is caringfor his environment.He also pointed out theurgency for people tochange their outlook and lifestyles to amore earth-friendly mode since erstwhile
ood-safe areas such
as Loyola Heights andMindanao (from wherehe originates), haveexperienced disasters wrought by Ondoy and other naturalcalamities. Apart from the effects of climatechange, Fr. Jojo pointed out that the negativeeffects of solid waste mismanagementaggravated these disasters.Parishioners and otherguests from the Diocese,the Barangay and otherinterested groups listenedintently to theinsights shared by Ms. AnnieGuerrero,president of theCravings Groupand Dr. MetPalaypay, Chairof the NationalCommissionon Solid WasteManagement.Esther Pachecoof the Public Affairs Ministry (PAM) said thatthe seminaraims to “shareinformationand knowledge on theinterconnectedness of food, healthand environment. Through theseseminars, we envision a greenparish and a barangay consciousof the importance of a nurturingMother Earth, of which everyone isa steward.”Ms. Guerrero, an awardee forZero Waste Management sharedher personal learnings on greenorganic farming, and her crusadeon reducing, reusing and recycling, both in the home front and in the
 work place. A certied champion
of the earth, Ms. Guerrero alsointeracted with the participantson how to make the vision to be a green parish, practical andachievable. She gave inputs on how to become environmentalists in thecourse of everyday living. She alsorecounted how she has also helpedin the livelihood of the marginalizedsimply by engaging them into earth-friendly activities. Ms. Guerrerolikewise introduced two books thatshe authored, “Green Pinoy” and“The Green Chef”.In the second half of the talk,Dr. Met Palaypay encouragedthe parish and barangay to bea national model of Zero WasteManagement. He also noted thatthere should be a continuous andmeaningful coordination betweenthe efforts of parish communities,private village associations and thelocal government like the barangay to achieve Zero Waste in theirenvirons.Susan Guanio of the PAM assuredparticipants that the ministry  would have more of these seminarsduring the year.The seminar was made enjoyable with some fun games and prizes.The National Nutrition Councillikewise donated several recipe books on “Gulay Cooking” to theattendees.
