- Giving peace a chance
Dag Hammarskjöld, secretary general o the UN between 1953 and 1961, was bornin Jönköping in 1905.Participation in the course inspired by the thinking o Dag Hammarskjöld couldbe the change o a lietime and a liestyle. Södra Vätterbygdens Folkhögskola hasaround 300 students attending courses in music, journalism, bible studies or graphi-cal design. Other students study along with American students or a semester andnish their studies at North Park University in Chicago. Finally, around 110 studentstake courses in, e.g. Maths, English, Swedish, Civics and Religion, to get pass coursesthey need or being admitted by universities. Jönköping is one o the astest growingcities in Sweden, an expansion based on entrepreneurial spirits and creative minds….The aims o the course is to bring young students rom dierent countries together todiscuss and learn more about international relations, peace- and confict theories andglobal environment. In short – politics and attitudes can change the world! The par-ticipants attending the course in 2007 come rom Sweden, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia,Poland and the USA. The dierences, but also similarities, between the participantso those countries will denitely increase the benets o the course.
The course will take place between 7 January and 23 May, 2008.
COURSES
International Relations
Four classes o 40 minutes per week. Understanding is always based on knowledge.This is also one o the oundations in IR. In IR you will study how the internation-al society is composed today and which the dominating global issues are. The basic
tools or peaceul coexistence and troubleshooting are other parts o this course aswell as the relationship between rich and poor countries. (4 credits/semester hours)
Swedish
Five classes o 40 minutes per week. The aim o this course is to improve the skill inthe Swedish language in general, but also to give a possibility to pass the TISUS-test,which evaluates the Swedish knowledge or those rom other countries who planto apply to a university in Sweden. I there is a wish to pass this test, the Swedishknowledge must be good beore the course starts, and extra Swedish classes may alsobe given. (4 credits/semester hours)
Scandinavian History and Culture
Four classes o 40 minutes per week. Why wasn’t Sweden involved in the SecondWorld War? Was Sweden really neutral? How has Sweden being one o the powerulnations in Europe in the 17th and the 18th century aected the relations inScandinavia today? What has created the “Scandinavian model” with a well built-out social welare system? (4 credits/semester hours)
Global Environment
Two classes o 40 minutes per week. The way we are polluting our world will notlead to a healthy earth in the long run, maybe not even in the short! The greenhouse eect, the distribution o the resources o the world, the rapid decrease o rainorests. How is this dealt with in Sweden and in other countries? How must our lie-styles change to make the earth a good place or our grandchildren as well?
