Title of Activity: Zip Zap Zoom

Number of Teams & Group Size: Involve all participants as 1 big group

Logistics Needed: None

Time Allocated: 15 - 30 minutes

Goal: Pass the current correctly, Self-Introduction

Preparation & Set-Up: None

Directions for Conducting the Activity: 1. Instruct participants to form 1 big circle.

Anti-Clockwise Direction / To The Right / Zip: 2. Start passing a current in an anti-clockwise direction, by raising your left arm to chest level, and pointing it to the right. Say aloud, Zip. 3. The next person in the circle should follow your actions, ie: raising their left arm, pointing it to the right, and saying Zip. 4. This should continue until the current has passed in an anti-clockwise direction all the way around the circle and reaches you.

Clockwise Direction / To The Left / Zap: 5. Next, pass a current in a clockwise direction. Raise your right arm to chest level, and point it to the left. Say aloud, Zap. 6. The next person in the circle should follow your actions, ie: raising their right arm, pointing it to the left, and saying Zap.

7. This should continue until the current has passed in a clockwise direction all the way around the circle and reaches you.

Reversing / Changing Directions: 8. Inform participants that because the current is free-flowing, at any time, any participant can choose to reverse the current by saying the correct words with accompanying actions, Zip for anti-clockwise and pointing right, or Zap for clockwise and pointing left. 9. The person next to them can then choose to continue passing the current in the same direction, or choose to reverse it. 10. Start passing a current around, and observe how participants react. Do this for at least 2 rounds, or until participants are familiar with the process. 11. Depending on the ability of participants, you may or may not choose to proceed with the next stage of the activity.

Throwing the Current & Catching the Current / Zoom: 12. Introduce the word Zoom, and the accompanying actions of putting both hands together, with palms touching, and pointing it like an arrow to any participant in the circle across from you. 13. Let participants know that this throws the current to the other person, but to do so, they must say aloud the word Zoom, and then call out the other participants first name, while also performing the accompanying action. - Zoom Michael. 14. The recipient of the current (The Catcher) must acknowledge by thanking The Thrower, by saying Thank you (First Name of The Thrower). - Thank you Sandy. 15. The Catcher must now decide what to do with the current, Zip, Zap, or Zoom, and carry on the activity.

Simultaneous Actions / Ta-Da: 17. Introduce a simultaneous action to be performed together with catching the current. 18. This action is to be performed by the 2 participants standing next to the Catcher, and at the exact same time when the Catcher says Thank you (First Name of The Thrower).

19. The 2 participants next to the Catcher must turn and face him / her, stretch out both hands towards him / her, as if displaying a prize. Palms should be outward and upward, with one hand higher than the other. 20. The 2 participants must say Ta-Da! while performing the actions. (As if the Catcher has just performed a praise-worthy feat.) 21. These 2 participants should also be alert, as the Catcher has a choice of which direction to pass the current. 22. Continue the activity until all participants are familiar with the instructions.

Specific Rules: 1. Participants must say aloud the correct words while performing the correct actions - Zip in an anti-clockwise direction while pointing right, Zap in a clockwise direction while pointing left, Zoom and then the selected participants first name while pointing both hands. 2. Recipients of the current can choose to continue passing the current in the same direction, by saying the same words and performing the same actions as the previous participant. 3. Recipients of the current can also choose to reverse the direction of the current, by saying the opposite words and performing the opposite actions from the previous participant. - Zip will reverse Zap, and vice versa. 4. Recipients of the current can also choose to throw the current to any person within the circle, Zoom (First Name). 5. The Catcher of Zoom must say Thank you (First Name of The Thrower). The Catcher must then decide what to do with the current, Zip, Zap, or Zoom. 6. If simultaneous actions are introduced, the 2 participants next to the Catcher must say Ta-Da, and perform the accompanying action towards the Catcher.

Variations: 1. Once participants are familiar with the activity, instruct them to speed up the passing of the current. 2. For a purely self-introduction activity, use only Zoom and catching the current. 3. Introduce other types of simultaneous actions. Thrower: Knife (First Name) + Knife throwing action Catcher: Catch (First Name of Thrower) + Catching action using 2 fingers

2 Participants next to Catcher: Dodge + Lean away from Catcher Thrower: Watermelon (First Name) + Draw a big circle in the air with both hands Catcher: Im Full (First Name of Thrower) + Hand rubbing stomach action 2 Participants next to Catcher: Yum Yum + Scooping and eating action

Facilitator Notes: Depending on the ability of participants to pick up on the instructions of the game, you may choose to continue or stop the progress of the activity at any time AFTER introducing Zip, Zap and reversing the current. - Skip Zoom and simultaneous actions if participants are unable to grasp the mechanics of the activity.
