Why Condoms in the schools?
I wasn’t there to parcipate in the discussion regarding condoms in the schools.I wasn’t there when the reasons were given and the stascs were graphed outsaying this or that. However, I recently read an arcle on this topic and it wasmenoned that 45% of new cases of HIV and aids are occurring with peopleunder the age of 25. My rst queson was “Why are we talking about casesunder the age of 25?” Most 19-25 year olds are not in High School, so why arethey factored in stasc about teen pregnancy and the spread of disease amongteenagers? But again, I wasn’t there. If the results of passing out clean needles to addictsor condoms to prostutes were given as support to having condoms available inschool; I would have said “the situaons are not similar! The addict is alreadyfamiliar with the acvity and has access to the drugs and the clean needle onlymakes the acvity safer and the same goes for the prostute—the primarydecision of engagement has already been made.I believe when we are passing out clean needles and condoms; we are just tryingto make it collecvely less costly by reducing some of the negave impact onlife and community. In the school, our girls are already facing so much peerpressure, why are we adding to the stress by making condoms readily available? In some situaons the school is the last place of refuge to learn what is and is notappropriate behavior. In reading about the vote I am reminded of when my kidswere teenagers and we were riding in the car and an inappropriate song comeson the radio and I would change the channel. My kids would say something like“Dad, we’ve heard that stu before”. My response would be “but you haven’theard it with Dad!”I’m also reminded of discussions with other parents on the importance of teaching your child the meaning of the word “No” the FIRST me you say it. Itseems to me, that for many parents teaching their child the meaning of the word“No” is tough but it’s vital in their development. When you tell your child no,you have your reasons but all too oen we let our child’s persistent whining winout and all you are le with is a child that has grown up into an adult unable tofollow direcons, respect authority and probably living at home or worst.Instead of the Board assisng in premature sexual acvies, let’s help builddreams our children can believe in. Let’s have a conversaon about theimportance of self-esteem and self-respect. Lets create a beam of hope that willblind them from the aracon of life-damaging acvies!Again, I wasn’t there but I would like to believe that if I were, my vote wouldhave been “NO!”
--Tim McCauley, a parent and concerned member of our community.
