SXSWedu Launches Next Big Idea: Inclusive Competitiveness

March 7, 2013

March 4, 2013

Since Twitter took the show by storm in 2007, and Foursquare did the same in 2009, there hasn't been a breakout product or service of the same magnitude at the South By Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) show

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a massive conference where collaboration is king, and big ideas emerge. It is the innovation and technology platform where Twitter and Foursquare were launched. More than 2,000 miles from Austin, something big is already happening in Portland, Oregon that will debut on a national stage at SXSWedu. It's called "Inclusive Competitiveness.

a national economic imperative

Led by SABB Campaign founder, Mike Green, an expert panel at Austins SXSWedu Conference established STEM education, high-growth entrepreneurship, access to capital, character and Inclusive CompetitivenessTM as THE framework necessary to develop a pipeline of black male talent flowing from public schools and connecting to both higher education and local innovation ecosystems. Investing in developing this 21st century framework is a national economic imperative.

THE NEXT BIG IDEA!

Saving Black boys requires first informing leaders and influencers who are disconnected from solutions inherent in a 21st century innovation economy and the local innovation ecosystem.

Solutions Summit
On March 5, 2013 a group of concerned leaders from around the nation gathered at Austins George Washington Carver Museum to have a frank discussion about the challenges facing Americas Black boys and investment opportunities available that offered a patchwork quilt of 21st century solutions to cultivate the talent of Black boys. Those ideas ranged across a system of Pipeline2ProductivityTM that included STEM education, high-growth tech entrepreneurship, access to capital and the overall impact of Inclusive Competitiveness.TM

SAVING AMERICAS BLACK BOYS

Austin, Texas | March 5, 2013

Mike Green
Founder, SABB
Thank you for joining us in a historic gathering of leaders and influencers from around the nation to focus on investing in solutions to save Americas Black boys. Were launching a national campaign to catalyze a conversation across America that leads to actionable investments in developing measurable outcomes in STEM education, entrepreneurship and job growth. URGENT ACTION! We move with a sense of urgency, understanding the challenge of saving our Black boys from wandering lost and confused, equipped with a 20th century mindset while immersed in a 21st century Innovation Economy. This cause requires informed, committed leaders / lifesavers who will connect Black boys to local innovation ecosystems and economic opportunities. NATIONAL INVESTMENT The investment in saving Americas Black boys is a national economic imperative. These are our fathers, sons and brothers, many of whom are stuck in the school-to-prison pipeline. Many are wasting unrealized talents, skills and ingenuity simply because they lack access to resources, infrastructure and mentoring to help them in their struggles to be the best they can be, and add to the economic competitiveness of the nation. My Huffington Post series, 3 Ways to Save Americas Black Boys, inspired the organizers of SXSWedu to offer me an opportunity to share these ideas with leading educators from around the nation. The SABB Solutions Summit in Austin, TX is a full-day extension of my SXSWedu session that affords an opportunity for stakeholders across the spectrum of Austins successful innovation ecosystem to go beyond the talk. Concerned leaders and influencers from across America have invested their time to be here with the Austin community. I thank you all for joining me and my partners in a commitment to implementing solutions. Mike Green

The best way to predict the future is to invent it. A discovery is said to be an accident meeting a prepared mind. This building is full of prepared minds we intentionally gathered to increase the chances of accidental engagements that may lead to discoveries of innovative collaborative outcomes. Innovation and inclusive competitiveness are essential game-changing components that will result in saving America's black boys. Innovation is anything but business as usual. Welcome to the official launch of Saving Americas Black Boys Solutions Summit (SABB) here in the beautiful city of Austin, TX. Some of you may have asked yourself, What is the SABB campaign all about? It is a national outreach consisting of a series of educational workshops, summits, forums and symposia. The offline events are bolstered by an online media platform through which the campaigns efforts are promoted and amplified to an engaged national audience and growing community of thought leaders. YOUR presence here today proves that we are on the right track and that THIS campaign is needed. As we host the launch of the Summit today at the beautiful George Washington Carver Museum, I must quote him by saying, When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world. Today that world is US! Saving Americas Black Boys means Changing the Game. We, at Game Changerz, believe that if you change the mindset of our nations black boys by educating them in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) arenas, they will become more competitive among their international peers. So let this day be the start of our collaboration in solving the challenges that face our nations black boys challenges that keep them disconnected from the pipeline of innovation and inclusive competitiveness. CEDS: 21st Century Economic Development & Policy Language

Do you speak 21st century ecodev and policy? What is CEDS? The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) is a federally mandated fiveyear plan updated annually designed to guide the economic growth of a region. See Austin, TX CEDS 2010-2015. Who produces a regions CEDS? Typically, the Regional Development Organization (RDO) for each region will produce the federally mandated CEDS. A national association of development organizations (NADO) has 540 member RDOs. Do you know who manages the RDO in your region? See NADO membership map. Why should I care? If you arent involved in establishing the economic strategy for your region and developing the plan for funding programs and activities that fit within the architecture of the economic strategy, then youre likely not in the value chain and may be left complaining far down the line after funds have been allocated and your communitys economic issues havent been adequately addressed in the funding process. The front of the line is at the CEDS strategy table. If you care about your community, you have to invest the time to sit at a table of collaborative input and economic strategy. Does your community have such a table of collaborative leadership that understands the local Innovation ecosystem? See Capital Area Economic Development District.

Economic Phenomena! In NADOs 540 RDO member regions, Black communities have a remarkably consistent dismal economy, decade after decade, with no change in sight.
Do metropolitan Black communities have an economic strategy roundtable seated with collaborative leadership attuned to needs of the region?

COLLABORATION IS THE KEY

Can we invest in best practices that already produce results in STEM education, high-growth entrepreneurship and access to capital that fuels the growth of startups?

SOLUTIONS

Can we form a collaborative table of strategic thinkers, planners and doers who represent the framework of the 21st century innovation economy? Can we establish private investments, without waiting on government or foundations, toward developing infrastructure essential for Black boys to understand the big picture and learn how to compete in the economic game?

Investing in entrepreneurship is key to building generational wealth. Sustaining such wealth requires a current working knowledge of the evolving innovation economy.

How do we build GENERATIONAL WEALTH?

SOLUTIONS

3 Ways to Save Americas Black Boys

LANGUAGE If we dont know the language of the 21st century innovation economy, how can we prepare youth to seriously compete in a capitalist society thats based upon competitive advantages and barriers to entry? Communication barriers lock doors, bar access to opportunity and undermine progress. It is essential that we understand how to converse in 21st century economics if we are to expect that our youth will become fluent in the economics of innovation. INVESTMENT Steve Blank, professor of entrepreneurship at Stanford University said: without a culture of risk capital, Silicon Valley would be just a bunch of smart engineers tinkering in their garages. A cursory look at most any Black community and the evidence is striking: There is no culture of investment in innovation. There is no culture of risk capital. We do not provide incentive for our kids to create, collaborate or even compete in the marketplace with their counterparts. Our youth suffer because we are risk averse. MENTORING Anyone who has tried to find their way on a road trip without a map or GPS understands the frustration of being lost and confused. Our boys need good guidance, counseling, encouragement, and support. Daily. They need coaches who understand the game.

Change their language Invest in their creativity Mentor them into the mainstream

INVEST IN AMERICAS BLACK BOYS. SUPPORT THE SABB CAMPAIGN.

This is a bold and historic declaration to a nation that has yet to rally around investing and supporting the success of its Black boys.

Our approach is to inform and educate leaders and influencers: i.e. policymakers, educators, professionals, business and community leaders, investors, philanthropists, clergy, pro athletes and celebrities.
We believe too many leaders and influencers of America's Black boys are disconnected from the knowledge and networks that drive the 21st century innovation economy. The result is a generation of lost, confused and angry youth who grow into lost, confused and angry men. They, in turn, continue to perpetrate the cyclical problem. The goal of our campaign is awareness and intervention. So, we focus on the adults. The leaders. Those in positions of power and influence. And it is these folks we call to gather at our summits. It is these leaders and influencers we call upon to support our efforts. Our campaign speaks of the problems and challenges, but only as the opening toward introducing and implementing solutions. Our summits Introduce unique visionary frameworks and call for a coalition of committed collaborators to work with us in implementing solutions that will disrupt the status quo and leverage today's innovative constructs, networks, technologies and opportunities to produce exponential (versus incremental) progress. The result is what we call Inclusive Competitiveness. The process is what we call Pipeline2Productivity. Our boys are talented. They are creative. They are smart. They hold within an inherent ingenuity that, if sufficiently tapped, could unleash a torrent of innovative entrepreneurs, job growth and generational wealth creation that benefits the overall economic competitiveness of every local region and the global economic competitiveness of the nation. Will you join us in making an investment in Americas Black Boys? We believe it is a 21st century national economic imperative. We hope you agree.
