In a revealing, personal talkthe Rebbe MH”M gave on Purim5711, just over a month afterhis official acceptance of theleadership of Chabad, the Rebbesaid the following in tears:
“Who am I and what amI?” “
Ich veis nit farvos matertmen mir
– What do they wantfrom me? I dont know why youare connected to me and I to you…”In the course of expressingthese doubts and reservations, the Rebbe turned to one of theelders of the Chassidim andsaid to him: With regard tothe inauguration of the
, the Second Temple, wefind that “the elders who hadseen the
, theFirst Temple…wept.” You, who were with the Rebbe [Rashab],
, and with myrevered father-in-law, the Rebbe[Rayatz] – it is indeed a show of discipline on your behalf that you do not cry… With [thepassing of] the Rebbe Rashab, there was his only son to takehis place, but now…?!([Reacting to thisoutpouring of emotion] severalof the elders of the Chassidimapproached the Rebbe
and said that the Chassidimdon’t want to hear this kindof talk. One of them calledout, “
You are the Rebbe
– alink on an unbroken chain of leadership starting from the Alter Rebbe,” and he askedfor the Rebbe
to pourfor him a cup of
,saying that he wants to receive
from the Alter Rebbe!
” The Rebbe
smiled and gave him
.) Among the things said inthis exchange, the Rebbe madeseveral statements expressinghaving
,such as:“It would appear that youhave no other option. In fact,I too have no other recourse”;“I’m not trying to shirk myresponsibility”; “I am onlya channel [for the RebbeRayatz]”; “We must be boundto the Rebbe. I take his place inonly a single respect.” At some point in this talk, the Rebbe said: After the
of theRebbe [Rashab],
, my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, once said thathe does not say of his father“
nishmaso Eden –
his soulresides in the Garden of Eden,”for what purpose is there insaying “
” whenit is easier and better to say“
– his soul resides within
”?(The Rebbe concluded) Sotoo with regard to the Rebbe: Idon’t say “
” [the soul of theRebbe Rayatz resides withinme]!
After singing the AlterRebbe’s “Niggun of DaledBavos” followed by “Nyeh Zshuritzi Chluptzi,” the RebbeMH”M addressed the Chassidimagain:
I would like to bless you, as well as myself--I once heard from myrevered father-in-law, theRebbe, with regard to giving
that it is appropriateto give
, inparticular upon the
, the holy restingplace of the Rebbe…I would like to give the
that we should see thefulfillment, on this Purim, of the
my father-in-law,the Rebbe, gave in one of thefinal years of his life in this world – that this should be thelast Purim in
, the lastPurim in exile.
And the Rebbe MH”Mconcluded:
