Ellis WRT 216 Jen Letherer Color Like a Kaleidoscope Canon Mark 5D III DVD and video stream for web Color Runtime: Approximately 5 minutes Purpose: The purpose of this video is to elicit an appreciation for color and color theory. It is an attempt to bring attention to the beauty of color and the way it can be manipulated on a piece of canvas. I want to capture the idea, emotion, rhythm, and movement of color in an interesting way, from the perspective of an artist. Im also creating this video in hopes that it will inspire creativity in those who view it. Summary: This video will begin with a white, blank piece of canvas; as well as a tray of watercolors, a brush, and a mason jar of water on the side. It will then show a close up of the canvas. In stop motion, different watercolors will be added to the canvas, one at a time. You will never see the hand or brush that applied them, just the effect of the colors swirling on the page. The pure color will be added first, and then other colors will be added and blended together. The canvas will be tilted, so the colors will run together, forming streaks and other interesting designs. The whole color palette will be painted. After this, outside elements will be used (one at a time) to manipulate the watercolors. First, salt will be sprinkled onto one area of the canvas to create a sandy texture. The goal is to capture the effect the salt has on the paint; to watch the colors react and spread on the page. Again, this will be in stop motion and you will not see the salt or the hand that applied it. You will only see the effects. In the same way, alcohol will be dropped onto another area of paint. Immediately, the paint will separate from the alcohol, creating a blotchy effect. After this, another area of color will blotted off with a paper towel, lifting areas of color off to reveal a lighter hue underneath. Next, sand paper will be used to create a scratchy effect and manipulate the color into a gradient. Finally, wax will be used to create abstract shapes and lines; and to add layers of color. The whole series of images will be replayed quickly, in reverse order until the canvas is once again blank. Hopefully this will achieve a kaleidoscope effect. It will then play forward once again, but this time, it will show the hand and brush applying the very first drop of color to the blank canvas. It will end immediately after this and the credits will roll.
