Dosimetry.

Investigations of the
origin, composition and
energy spectra of cosmic radiation and solar
energetic particles over
the last few decades
were undertaken to understand the fundamental processes responsible for all of these phenomena. Special experimental techniques
and analysis methods
were developed to provide the most re liable
data possible and today
we have a satisfactory
(if not perfect!) view of
the role of these particles in the solar system
and our Galaxy in general.

An opportunity to apply many of

these techniques and methods of
analysis to the field of space and
upper atmosphere dosimetry materialized in recent years with the
need to understand the effects of
cosmic and solar particle radiation on humans in space and at
aircraft altitudes. The increasing
interest in the problem in space
has arisen due to the plans to
send humans to Mars and other
planets, while the expansion of
air traffic and the tendency to
travel at higher altitudes has
brought attention to the possible
hazards to aircrew.
The talk will address many of
these issues and will describe the
on-going major space experiment, Matroshka, and other work
in progress on the International
Space Station.

The 7th General Conference of the

Balkan Physical Union
The BPU executive committee in the Istanbul meeting of
2006, during the BPU6 Conference, has decided, following a proposal of the Hellenic Physical Society, that the
next general conference will take place in Alexandroupolis, Greece. In the executive committee meeting of the

NN09 focuses on the latest advances on Nanosciences &

Nanotechnologies promoting profound scientific discussions between different disciplines. Scientists from multidisciplinary research and application areas are asked to join
this conference, to discuss the possible benefits of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in their R&D efforts, to advance networking and collaboration between different academia, research and industry players in the field and to
stimulate the exchange of educational concepts. The Conference will include invited lectures from leading scientists
and industry experts, oral and poster presentations, and
nanotechnology instrumentation exhibition as well as surrounding events. NN09 satellite events organized in the

MPGD2009
1st International Conference on
Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors
12-15 June 2009, Kolympari, Crete, Greece
The invention of Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors
(MPGD), in particular the Gas Electron Multiplier
(GEM) and the Micro-Mesh Gaseous Structure
(Micromegas), has triggered active research and development on a new generation of gaseous detectors.
These technologies, together with other micro-pattern
detector schemes recently developed, allow for the
development of detectors with unprecedented spatial
resolution, high-rate capability, large sensitive area,
operational stability, and increased radiation hardness.
A large number of groups world wide are developing
MPGD devices for future experiments at particle accelerators, for experiments in nuclear and astroparticle physics, as well as for industrial applications such
as medical imaging, material science, and security
inspection.

NN09 key objective is to

promote profound scientific
discussions between different disciplines and to discuss the possible benefits of
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in their R&D efforts,
networking and collaboration between different academia,
research and industry players in the field and to stimulate
