toevenacknowledgetheservice.TwodayslateranactivememberofourchurchcameintomyofficetotellmehehadAIDS.OnEasterSundayalongtimefriend,andpartnerinministryatGoodShepherdParishMCCinChicago,cametomeandsaid,"Ijustcametosay'good-bye'andtellyou'Iloveyou.'"ThreeweekslaterhewasdeadofAIDS.IparticipatedinhisfuneralserviceatMCCLA.WhatdoweinUFMCCsayinresponsetothisthreatandhorrorcalledAIDS?
In
additiontokeepingourselvesinformedregardingthecfuformationfromtheCenterforDiseaseControl,otherresearchpro-grams,thesensitivityandawarenessofmedicalprofessionalsinourrespeetiveareas,andthelocalandnationalAIDSsupportgroupswithinourowncom-munities,shouldweasauniqueandspiritualbodybeginformulatinganequallyuniqueandspiritualresponse?Ibelievetheanswerisyes.AsapeoplewhoseeveryactionanddecisionmustbeguidedandinformedbytheGoodNewsthatGodwaspresentinJesusChristandcontinuesthatpresencewithusthroughtheHolySpirit,wemustbringthesameinnovativeandcreativeenergytothisissuethatweareattemptingtobringtosomanyotherswithwhichwearefaced.Iwouldlikefortheremainderofthisarticletobeseenasnothingmorethanabeginning.ThefourpointsofdeparturewhichIshalldiscussare,tome,crucial.However,theyareinnowayexhaustive.IinviteotherpersonswithinUFMCCtoreviseandaugmentthem.Seeingthis,therefore,asthebeginningofaprocess,Iwouldliketo
suggest
thatweinternalizeandactualize
atleast
thefollowingfourawarenessesinourresponse.First,
wemustremainasex-positivepeople.AIDSVICTIM:"IshouldhaveknownthatGodwouldpunishme.Iwashavingtoomuchfun."
Oneofthemosttragicmistakeswecouldmakewouldbetobecomeasex-negativepeople,eveninadvertantly.BothinlanguageandattitudewemustavoidanyindicationthatAIDSisinanywaya"plague"or"punishment"beingvisiteduponusbecauseofoursexuality.Instead,it
is
atimeforanintenseandpersonalevaluation,onthepartofGaymales,ofoursexualpatterns,andcautionandrestraintinactivitiesknowntoputoneatincreasedrisk.Twothousandyearsofignorance,fear,guiltandshameregardinghumansexuality(tosaynothingofhomosexuality)isjust
beginning
tobereversedwithinChristianthought,writingsandpractice.Ibelieve.thattheexistenceandwitnessofUFMCChasbeenaninextricablefactorinthisreversal.Toabdicatethatinfluencenow,aninfluenceIbelieveGodhas

calledusto,wouldconstitutesin.onourparts.Second,
