It’s always important to understand the basics before you jump into something you don’t reallyknow how to do. I’ve realized that many of my articles are geared toward readers who alreadyhave a fundamental knowledge and understanding of search marketing, but what about all of youwho are “beginners”, trying to rap your head around this crazy little SEO idea? Well, you are inluck. I thought I would go through some of the basics.The first question that always arises is, what exactly is search engine optimization (commonlyreferred to as SEO)? In its simplest form, SEO is improving the amount of quality traffic your website gets from search engines through search results.Outlined below are some of the basic SEO steps you will need to get your  SEO campaignup and running.1) Outline a strategy: This is really a compilation of all the items listed below, but you need aclear SEO strategy. This means addressing a variety of questions concerning who your targetaudience is, what’s your budget, goals, establishing an SEO team and committing to the process.2) Find your target audience: Who are you trying to reach? What are the best ways of doing this?Identifying your audience will give you a clearer picture of the SEO strategies you need to im- plement to be successful.3) Establish a budget for the project: How much money do you have to spend and how muchSEO needs to be done to help improve site traffic? Your budget has to be realistic in generate res-ults. One hour of SEO per month probably isn’t going to have any added benefit. The moretraffic you want to your site, the more SEO you will have to do.4) Set measurable goals: The keyword here is “measurable.” Yes, we all want to improve websitetraffic, but by how much? 1,000 new visitors per month, 2,000…? Setting a clear, measurablegoal will help you determine if the strategies you have chosen are effective.5) Establish an SEO team: Put together a team of individuals who are committed to constantlylearning new strategies, so they can continue to re-evaluate your existing strategies and adjustyour SEO campaign as needed.6)Learn: In order to be good or even great at SEO you have to commit to the fact that it’s a con-stant learning process. Every day I am learning something new. You have to remember to keepup with industry news and adjust your strategies to meet the new industry demands.
