THE MYSTICISM OFSAINT AUGUSTINE
Augustine’s vision at Ostia is one of the most influential accounts of mysticalexperience in the Western tradition, and a subject of persistent interest toChristians, philosophers and historians. This book explores Augustine’s accountof his experience as set down in the
Confessions
, and explores his mysticismin relation to ancient Platonism. John Peter Kenney argues that while theChristian mysticism created by Augustine is in many ways founded on Platonicthought, Platonism ultimately fails Augustine in his efforts to arrive at anenduring contemplation of the divine. The
Confessions
offer a response to thisimpasse by generating two critical ideas in medieval and modern religiousthought: firstly, the conception that contemplation provides only knowledge of God, in contrast to Neo-Platonism; secondly, the distinction between salvationand enlightenment.
 John Peter Kenney
is Dean and Professor of Religious Studies at St Michael’sCollege in Vermont. He is the author of
Mystical Monotheism: A Study in Ancient Platonic Theology
(1991).
