Description

This book constitutes a general overview of the Northern Epirus
issue, of the issue of the Greek ethnic minority that lives in Albania, and aims at the introduction of these issues both in the Greek and mainly in the international environment.
It includes a historical overview of the Greeks who live in Albania, a native ethnic group, which having faced old challenges
(establishment of the Albanian state, days of the com-munist regime of Emver Hoxha) as well as new ones (transitional period), is trying to secure its rights and promote them on the international scene, when those rights are not implemented and when they are violated.
Several big issues remain unresolved and intensify over time. These include the education of the members of the Greek minority, its religious freedom, the return of private, community and church properties to their rightful owners, the non implementation by the Albanian side of their obligations and commitments for human and minority rights, and the systematic use of terrorizing methods against the Greek minority

Pyrros-1

The greek ethnic minority in Albania is a native ethnic group. A multitude of archaeolo-gical findings and historical documents prove that. The most significant and flourishing cities in Northen Epirus were Epidamnos, Finiki, Vouthrotos (close to modern day Agioi Saranta), Orikos, Apollonia (Pogiani – Fieri), Amantia (Avlona) and others. According to the mythology, the last four cities had been founded by the Argonauts. The Greeks of Northern Epirus, like all the rest of the Epirotans, had the Oracle of Dodoni as their main religious center. Statues of Dodoneos Zeus have been found all over Northern Epirus. Archaeolo- gical findings and historical documents prove olso that they participated in the Olympic Games, they believed in the same twelve Gods as all Greeks, their public life was the same as the other Greeks – gymnasiums, stadiums, theaters, marketplaces and they spoke the Greek language.

The greek ethnic minority in Albania is not a native ethnic group. What author Theofanis Malkidis says in his book about nativeness of greek ethnic minority in Albania do not represent the truth. At this point his book is an extention of "scientific thought" of earlier and present greek historians, which are very fond on helenizating any toponym or other things that sound greek. It is true that Tucydides and other ancient greek writers knew the fact that Epirus (in greek means "mainland") native dwellers were barbarian and not greek.
