In 2009
, an estimated 6,300 Iowans will die from cancer,14 times the number caused by auto fatalities. Cancerand heart disease are the two leading causes of death inIowa. The cancer projections in this report are based uponmortality data the State Health Registry of Iowa receivesfrom the Iowa Department of Public Health. The Registryhas been recording the occurrence of cancer in Iowa since1973, and is one of fourteen population-based registries andthree supplementary registries nationwide providing data tothe National Cancer Institute. With
2009 Cancer in Iowa
 the Registry makes a general report to the public on thestatus of cancer. This report will focus on: 
a description of the Registry and its goals; 
cancer estimates for 2009; 
a special section on sources for cancer data; 
brief summaries of recent/ongoing research projects; 
a selected list of publications from 2008.
 
CANCER IS A REPORTABLE DISEASE AS STATED in the Iowa Administrative Code. Cancer data arecollected by the State Health Registry o Iowa, located atThe University o Iowa in the College o Public Health’sDepartment o Epidemiology. The sta includes more than50 people. Hal o them, situated throughout the state,regularly visit hospitals, clinics, and medical laboratoriesin Iowa and neighboring states to collect cancer data.A ollow-up program tracks more than 99 percent o the cancer survivors diagnosed since 1973. This programprovides regular updates or ollow-up and survival.The Registry maintains the confdentiality o the patients,physicians, and hospitals providing data.In 2009 data will be collected on an estimated 16,000new cancers among Iowa residents. In situ cases o bladdercancer are included in the estimates or bladder cancer,to be in agreement with the defnition o reportable caseso the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)Program o the National Cancer Institute.Since 1973 the Iowa Registry has been unded primarilyby the SEER Program o the National Cancer Institute.Iowa represents rural and Midwestern populations andprovides data included in many National Cancer Institutepublications. Beginning in 1990 between 5 and 10 percento the Registry’s annual operating budget has been providedby the state o Iowa. Beginning in 2003, the Universityo Iowa has been providing cost-sharing unds. The Registryalso receives unding through grants and contracts withuniversity, state, and national researchers investigatingcancer-related topics.
The Goals of theRegistry are to:
assemble and reportmeasurements of cancer incidence,survival and mortalityamong Iowans;• provide informationon changes over timein the extent of diseaseat diagnosis, therapy,and patient survival;promote and conductstudies designed toidentify factors relatingto cancer etiology,prevention and control;respond to requestsfrom individuals andorganizations in thestate of Iowa for cancerdata and analyses;• provide data andexpertise for cancerresearch activitiesand educationalopportunities.
