An Everyday Miracle
appy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Freddie,Happy Birthday
toooo youuuuu!” Wild and hearty applause rocked the room.
Freddie Brenner blushed with embarrassment. He watched his family andrelatives proceed to shower him with hugs and kisses. Yuck! He was a yearolder today
 —
almost a man, and his Aunt Margo was still squeezing him like some pudgy-cheeked baby.
“Freddie dear,” she cooed, ruffling his hair. “I have something special for you.Something I know you‟ve wanted.”
There were lots of things he wanted. Take your pick. But he had a pretty good ideawhich
one she‟d sprung for. He watched his Aunt Margo retrieve a tall, odd
-sized package
she‟d hidden behind the sofa. He let out a whoop and immediately seized it. It was a hockeystick! Even with wrapping paper, the shape was unmistakable. He‟d really h
oped for a newone. He quickly ripped off the colorful paper and ran his hand over the smooth hardwoodsurface. It was beautiful! Top of the line.
“Ooooohh,” echoed Freddie‟s brother, Michael. He closed in for a better look, likingwhat he saw. “C‟mon, let‟s go to the park and try it out!

“Good idea.”

But his dad stopped them. He had other plans. “Your mother and I have something we‟dalso like to give you.”

Freddie‟s mom was glowing with anticipation. He knew whatever they had bought him
had to be
something special. He‟d already searched every hiding place in the house hoping to
find out what it was, but his mother was getting too clever for him. His search had come upempty-handed.His dad left the room and came back carrying a large box wrapped all in purple paper
with blue ribbon streamers hanging over the sides. “For you, son. Happy Birthday from both of us!”
Even though it was pretty as a picture and he knew his Mom had taken a lot of timewrapping it, he still tore into it in two seconds flat, ripping the paper to shreds. That was half thefun of getting presents.
