To: Kim Powers <kpowers11@gmail.com>Roast Beefs:(I can't tell if this image is adorable or frightening)Hello my little Popsels, and welcome back to another DOUBLE issue of Pop! Goes the Culture. To help you cope with the loss of an hour to Daylight Savings Time, I've decided to present you with an extra hour of Pop! reading. Now, for reals, after this issuewe should be allll caught up and on our regularly Poppin' schedule.Hopefully I'm not the only person who felt like Daylight Savings Time occurred earlier than usual this year. Unless you live inHawaii or Arizona, where you like your clocks to stay the same year-round.Well, I decided to do some research for you all. And by research, I mean fool around on google image search for an hour, andthen look up an out of date article for two minutes (but look at this!http://www.habitationofjustice.com/wp-content/uploads/what_daylight_savings_time_feels_like.jpg

)Technically, DST has been scheduled to occur earlier since 2007. This is when the Energy Policy Act of 2005 went into effect(daylight savings time earlier = more sunlight = use less energy) and now daylight savings time occurs the second Sunday of March. This year March started on a Sunday, February was a blur and BAM put on another pot of coffee for the next twomonths. And now, let's balance that intelligent, science-themed paragraph with an equally healthy dose of pop culture(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkTWHlD_BjM). Let's get started, shall we?

(I spent ten minutes looking for Green Acres photos...only to realize it was Eva Gabor, not Zsa Zsa Gabor in that show. Instead, you get this guy.)1) His Orchestrahttp://www.myspace.com/hisorchestramusicI've had my ear on this Los Angeles band since last year, and eagerly awaited their full-length release to see if they lived up tothe hype I had in my head. They do! I hate to use this comparison, but when I first listened to them I though "oh, this is what Arcade Fire would sound like if they moved to Los Angeles." Which I fully admit is not a fair comparison/description to use. But there's something very "LA"about this band. Not the schmaltzy, vapid, surface-obsessed Los Angeles, but rather, the first month a person moves to LosAngeles. The constant sunshine, the new surroundings, and most of all, the hope.Even with songs such a "Black Coffin" and "Rain/Snow", I still find something hopeful about their music. They're not naive aboutthe troubles that are going to inevitably come their way, but rather, are looking forward to life's ups and downs, one harmonicscale at a time.2) Zazahttp://www.myspace.com/warofzaza

I didn't expect for Boing Boing to start recommending me great bands, but low and behold, they gave this Brooklyn band ashoutout. Shoegazing trance, this group is best served with a partly cloudy day and a pensive thought or two.3) Daweshttp://www.myspace.com/dawesthebandI'm a big fan of finding new bands through other band's myspace. Speaking of using myspace as a tool for discovering newmusic, will the decline of myspace as a social networking tool also mean the decline of using the site for music? And if so, arethere any new successors out there? I thinklast.fmdoes a great job of recommending related bands, but I find them lacking inthe amount of full tracks they offer for listen on their site.Anywho, Dawes is an unsigned group from California who I believe have gone on tour with The Delta Spirit (unfortunately notplaying when we saw them back in January). I really think Americana/Alt-Country ish style of music will really start coming intothe forefront of popular music over the next couple of years (I mean, FLANNEL is coming back into style...it's either Americanaor grunge and I don't think bleach is popular enough these days for grunge to push forward). This band feels like a secret - their songs are not meant to be shouted out, they are meant to be passed from person to person with an elusive smile.4) PT Walkleyhttp://www.myspace.com/ptwalkleyWhen you think of a concept album about a trust fund 20-something, words like "lush" and "gorgeous" usually don't come tomind. But PT Walkley has really nailed the story in his debut album, Mr. Macy Wakes Alone.PT's website tells me that he opened for Coldplay at Madison Square Garden, and has also composed for film and commercial, but after listening to this album, it shouldn't take very long for him to get the solo recognition he deserves.I will be the first to admit this, but I don't think enough time and energy is dedicated to listening to not only a whole album, but tolisten to the album in the order it originally placed. This is definitely one of those albums to listen in order - not only for the story, but there's just such a lovely flow to his work. Maybe I just have Beatles "LOVE" on my mind, but if this whole artist thing doesn'twork out for PT, he should definitely write the music/book to a Cirque De Solei show. Hipster Cirque De Solei? Yes please.2/27 Track Listing:1. Asobi Seksu - Me & Mary2. Barry Louis Polisar - Me and You3. Ben Kweller - Old Hat4.
