A lawyers' bodyhere has filed a petition inthe Madras High Courtseeking suspension of 15police personnel, includingcity Police CommissionerK. Radhakrishnan, for thealleged attack onadvocates, judges, courtstaff and litigants on itspremises on February 19.The petition, filed byMadras High CourtAdvocates' Association(MHAA) President R.C.Paul Kanakaraj on Monday,also sought criminalcontempt proceedingsagainst Chief SecretaryK.S. Sripathi and HomeSecretary S. Malathi, DGPK.P. Jain, additional DGPIntelligence Anup Jaiswaland 18 State governmentofficials in connection withthe incident. It also soughttransfer of the DGP.The petition alsowanted police to deposit itsentire log of internalcommunication fromFebruary 17 to 19 with thecourt and "withdrawal ofshoot-at-sight orders givenon February 20".On February 19,police entered the MadrasHigh Court premises andresorted to lathi chargeon lawyers agitating onthe Sri Lankan Tamils andChidambaram Templeissues. The police actionleft many advocatesinjured and court propertydamaged.Ever since theincident, the lawyershave been boycottingwork demanding actionagainst the police officersresponsible for enteringthe court premiseswithout permission.In a bid to endthe stalemate, theSupreme Court hadappointed the JusticeB.N. SrikrishnaCommission to look intothe issue and fixresponsibility for theevents of February 19.In its report tothe apex court, the panelslammed the lawyerscalling them as"hooligans" and"miscreants". However, itdid not spare the policeeither and said that theyhad gone "berserk" andresorted to force "beyondwhat was permissible."The committeealso held the judges ofthe Madras High Courtresponsible for thepresent "piquantsituation" by following a"soft-pedalling policy" inthe context of the protestsby lawyers sympathisingwith the LTTE cause.The provocationfor the violence in theHigh Court premises onFebruary 19 was startedby the "unruly mob oflawyers" but "once thepolice got into action,there was no stoppingthem" and they went"berserk" and damagedthe court properties,Justice Srikrishna, aretired apex court judge,said in his interim report.The State levelJoint Action Committee(JAC) of Bar Associationshas, however, rejectedthe Justice Srikrishnainterim report. In a pressrelease here, it allegedthat the report "is riddledwith factualcontradictions andinconsistencies".

The Flight landednormally and thetechnicians found nomajor fault and clearedthe aircraft in 30 minutes.This flight thereafterdeparted as scheduled.

The Employees’State InsuranceCorporation (ESIC)Hospital in K K Nagar willstart its own Post-graduateInstitute of MedicalSciences and Researchfrom this academic year,said Dr Suman Seth,Medical Superintendenttoday on the occasion ofthe ongoing ESI fortnightcelebration.About 30 PGseats would be filled up innine departments in themedical colleges for theacademic year of 2010-11.The college would beginin K K Nagar itself. Theentire cost of the projectand the fortnightcelebrations will be Rs200 crore, informed DrSeth. The ninedepartments wouldinclude medicine,gynecology, surgery,pediatrics, pathology,microbiology andbiochemistry amongothers.With a massivefacelift, the patients at thehospital are in for aluxurious treat. Waitingfor them is a state of theart Intensive Care Unitand a renovatedPediatric ward. Thehospital has tied up withreputed hospitals in thecity for providing superspecialty treatment to theeligible beneficiaries.Dr Seth informsthat the hospital hasbeen upgraded and theadditional infrastructureis in place. About Rs 1crore has been procuredas part of theupgradation project.

Newlyappointed Madras HighCourt Chief Justice H LGokhale on Mondayrecommended to theSupreme Court thatformer acting ChiefJustice S JMukhopadhaya, whocame under attack by theSrikrishna Commission,who probed the police-lawyers clash onFebruary 19, betransferred to some otherHigh court withpromotion.On the day ofassuming office, theChief Justicerecommended that theapex court transferJustice Mukhopadhayato any other court in thecountry with elevation ''tosave the decorum of theHigh Court and the judge'' in the wake ofSrikrishna Commissionpassing adverse remarksagainst the former actingChief Justice.High CourtRegistrar General RMala sent the letter to theSupreme court on behalfof the Chief Justice,highly placed sourcestold a news agency.JusticeSrikrishna, in his interimreport, accused thelawyers of behaving likehooligans, while indictingthe police for theirexcesses.The retired judgealso said the soft attitude ofthe former acting ChiefJustice had resulted in theclash and virtually blamedhim for his inaction.After theCommission's interimreport, JusticeMukhopadhaya fell sickwith high Blood Pressureand viral fever and wasadmitted to a hospital, theChief Justice said, whilerecommending hiselevation. ''This is to savethe decorum of the MadrasHigh Court and the formeracting Chief Justice'', hesaid.

Officials of theDirectorate of Vigilanceand Anti-Corruptionconducted a surprisecheck on the office of theManaging Director,Metropolitan TransportCorporation, here onMonday and seizedRs.6.19 lakh.
Accordingto DVAC sources, thecash was seized from theofficial car, drawers andPersonal Assistant of theMD, M. RamaSubramanian. Based oninformation that the officialwas taking bribe fromcontractors during workinghours, a special team ledby Deputy Superintendentsof Police M.B.N. Natarajanand S. Thirunavukkarasuconducted the surprisecheck that lasted aboutthree hours.
“We haveseized Rs.6.19 lakh duringthe search. He (RamaSubramanian) also hasabout Rs.3 lakh in his bankaccount. Officials of theDistrict Inspection Cellwere present during theoperation,” Mr.Thirunavukkarasu saidadding that investigationwas on to ascertain thesource of the moneyseized.
