 It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the1980s to replace India's ageing MiG-21,

(IAF) plans to have 42 sqaudrons of Combat aircrafts
 
its sanctioned strength of combat aircraft from 39.5
squadrons

got approval from three outof the four members of theAppointments Committeeof the Cabinet (ACC) withina couple of months but washeld up by the PMO formore than two years onvarious pretexts.In 1998 USA imposed an embargo on allsupport for the LCA and confiscated alldata and documentation in possession of our team working there on proving thedigital flight control system on an F-16simulatorAir Commodore PM Ramachandranwas willing to take on the challengeprovided his name was proposed jointly by DRDO & Air Force so that
he was not identified as an “AirForce” man or a “DRDO” man and he
could function freely in the interestsof the projectA lot of hard work now had to be redoneby the team on their return to India.Ultimately, the LCA TechnologyDemonstrator-I flew for the first time on4 Jan 2001A higher risk alternative of digital quad-redundant pathhad been chosen for the flyby wire system, but noinvestments were beingmade for testing the systembeing developedNeed for LCA accepted in1969the Final permission was grantedonly in 1983 that too theresponsibility of design was given toDRDO (ADA lab) and manufacturingto HALproject definition phase forthe LCA had beencompleted by 1989. A fullscale engineeringdevelopment (FSED) phase-Iwas sanctioned in 1993
