Eighteen New Age Liesand the Cult of Eckankar
by Robert Pye
Followers of New Age movements do not regard themselves as practitioners of theoccult, but they are. In this paper I will set out what I see as the worst lies told bythese movements, with particular reference, where appropriate, to the cult of Eckankar. After 33 years as a member of Eckankar, I learned from hard experience that none of these movements are what they seem. Let me explain how they work.
The Great Work
Witches, Masons, Rosicrucians, Cabalists and other leading practitioners of the occultdecided in the late 18
th
century that, if they were to increase their influence in society, they would have to present their beliefs in a disguised form. So they formulated a planknown as the Great Work. By implementing the Great Work they hoped to lureChristians into accepting beliefs which, had they been presented in their true form, would have been rejected out of hand as the work of Satan. The Great Work led to many innovative ways of spreading occult ideas. Theseincluded hypnotism (or Mesmerism), spiritualism (séances), the Theosophy of HelenaBlavatsky, the Anthroposophy of Rudolph Steiner, Wicca, Darwinian Evolution,Freudian psychology, the Society of Psychical Research, and the endowment of academic chairs to investigate the paranormal. Stronger links were forged between themain branches of Freemasonry (which purports to accept Christianity but is actually based on Egyptian magic and the worship of Lucifer, the Light-bearer). Manyinfluential works were ‘channeled’ from demonic sources by willing human puppets. These included Helena Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, Rudolph Steiner, Aleister Crowley,Joan Grant, Edgar Cayce, G I Gurdjieff, Ron Hubbard and Paul Twitchell. Especiallyinfluential were the works of Madame Blavatsky, on which most of the ideas of the New Age movement are based. The plan behind the Great Work also included the creation of pseudo Christianchurches to lure true Christians away from the unadulterated teachings of the Bible. These included the Mormons (founded by a practising Mason, Joseph Smith) and theJehovah’s Witnesses (founded by Charles Taze Russell, a high level Mason). Thework of Edgar Cayce also falls into this bracket since he purported to be a follower of Christ, when in fact he was channeling demonic ideas which were completely atvariance with the teachings of the Bible. The ‘sleeping prophet’ was a mouthpiece for heresy and deception, though he did not recognise this himself. To that extent, hediffered from Blavatsky and Crowley, who were fully conscious of their connectionwith Lucifer.1

The plan also included a broad attack on mainstream Christianity. Protestant menwere lured into joining the local Masonic lodge, generally on the pretext that it wouldimprove their social standing and business connections. This got spectacular results. For example, virtually the entire leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention is nowcontrolled by the Masons.A different approach was taken with the Catholics. They were presented with a newdeity, the Queen of Heaven. The elevation of the earthly mother of Jesus to the statusof a Goddess was achieved in 1854 when the Pope officially declared that she was born completely without sin and lived in a totally sinless state throughout her life – which virtually put her on a par with Jesus. This was reinforced by another formalPapal declaration in 1950 that she ascended bodily into heaven. Since goddessworship is central to paganism and witchcraft, this was a major coup.Eckankar has its own goddess figure, known as Simha, the Lady of ECK, as well asanother divine guide, the female ‘ascended master,’ Kata Daki. It also has anextensive set of beliefs that are completely consistent with those of Masonry, Cabala,Theosophy and Egyptian magic. However, most of these beliefs are presented toEckankar members in a disguised form.
The Occult disguised as New Age
The occult basis of Eckankar is explored in detail in two important papers by Ruthand Noah Samuelson,
Evidence that Eckankar is a covert occult organization and a front for the Illuminati
and
The Dark Side of Eckankar
. Quoting extensively from theEckankar writings of Paul Twitchell and Harold Klemp, they prove conclusively thatthe god of Eckankar is Lucifer, the Light-bearer, whom Eckankar members call theLight Giver. Their ‘master’ bears the honorific title
Mahanta
, which comprises thenames of three Egyptian deities (demons) – Maa (or Maat), On (the deity presidingover the solar city of Heliopolis), and Ptah (another name for the god Ra). Membersof Eckankar worship many deities, but their chief deity is called Sugmad. This word isan amalgam of the names of three Egyptian deities – Saa, Hu and Maa, a trinity of gods which figure prominently in the occult practices of the Old Kingdom. Memberschant ‘Hu’ constantly, unaware that in doing so they are invoking an Egyptian god.The founder of Scientology, Ron Hubbard, was a practising Satanist, while thefounder of Eckankar, Paul Twitchell, was a close associate of Hubbard and long-timestudent of the occult. Twitchell plagiarised all of his teachings from a variety of sources, mainly the Radhasoami and Sant Mat paths of Northern India, whilerepeatedly asserting that they were completely original and that he had been ‘chosen’to reveal them. One longstanding critic of Eckankar, Professor David Lane, hasdescribed Twitchell as a “pathological liar.”The path of Wicca is nothing more than traditional demonic witchcraft presented in asugar-coated form, while the various Angel cults, which are so popular among NewAge followers, are all designed to bring their practitioners under the influence of demonic entities in the guise of angelic beings. Reiki is presented as an Orientalhealing modality, when in fact it is an initiatory path whose practitioners channel anoccult force that is potentially harmful.2

The Great Work has been very successful. It has got millions of decent people toaccept a range of beliefs and practices which draw them away from the all-powerful protection of Christ. The most zealous followers, who practice meditation, contemplation, creative visualization or ‘spiritual’ healing, are going even further andexposing themselves to supernatural influences which are demonic in origin and potentially very dangerous.
Demonic Attack
Let me give an example from personal experience. On November 15th, 1985, Ireceived the 5
th
initiation in Eckankar. This is meant to be the initiation which opensone to true enlightenment. I was given the initiation in a short ceremony during theafternoon. In the evening, as soon as I sat down to contemplate, I was attacked by aswarm of demons. They appeared around my ‘third eye’ as a group of 10-20 littlefirey lights, rather like a swarm of angry bees. I immediately came out of contemplation, greatly shocked by this attack. Rather than accept defeat, I went back into contemplation again and the swarm of demons instantly returned. Theycontinually lunged against my forehead, trying to gain entry. I continued to go in andout of contemplation for a minute or so at a time for about twenty minutes. The wholeexperience was very frightening, but in my naivety (a common defect among NewAgers) I decided that I was being ‘tested.’These nasty encounters continued every day for thirteen weeks, then stoppedabruptly.

If I had had even an ounce of sense, I would have recognised this for what it was – ademonic assault caused by the 5
th
initiation. In other words, the 5
th
initiation inEckankar is designed to forcibly open one’s ‘third eye’ (the so-called chakra in one’sforehead) so that demons can gain entry. Please think carefully about this, dear reader, since it shows just how dangerous this‘spiritual’ path really is.
The Force
It might be helpful at this stage to make some additional points of a general natureregarding the occult. By various arcane means, all of its practitioners are trying tomanipulate The Force. Those who work at ‘white’ magic, as they call it, are focusingon the Luciferian or light side of the Force, while those who practice black magic areworking with the darker, Satanic element. However, spiritually it is
all
magic and
all
harmful. There is no such thing as ‘white’ magic, just magic. The Force is a singleentity, thus
everything
to do with the Force is completely within Satan’s domain. Some Wiccans claim that they never cast evil spells or work with Satan. However, any practising Wiccan who sincerely believes this is a fool. They forget that everyspell is a product of darkness or the dark light of Lucifer. All claims upon The Forcemust be paid for and Satan will exact his toll in full measure at his leisure. Remember, his ultimate objective is to enslave
all
who practice magic, in any form, white or  black.3

Robert --- Awesome article! May the Lord bless your efforts and may he protect you through the power of the Holy Spirit! This great deception is unfortunately leading many to hell because it allows them to believe that they are making spiritual prog- ress while permitting them to hold onto their favorite sins - usually sexual immorality!Eckankar feeds the demon of spiritual pride...Mark.

Robert, Thank God I found your article. I too was a member of Eckankar for a few years. When it came to my initiation where I was to denounce Jesus and Jehovah, I balked. I left Eckankar immediately and did not renounce my initiations in writing, feeling that the power of Christ was enough protection for me. Over the past 15 years I have felt that God did not hear my prayers any more. I have

be careful when choosing any church wether christian church or not before you enter cult. i attended enckankar for 2 years. since i went back to roman catholic church, i have been having problems

enckankar is an ocultic religion. people should be careful about religion. Infact, ocultic religions are already disguising themselves as christian churches. Beware!

Robert... thank you for some awesome confirmation. This is very affirming for me ....great article, good job and G-D Bless.

I am troubled some about what you write Robert, but certainly appreciate your viewpoint. Equally troubling to me was how certain Roman authorities decided what books would be in the Bible and that many Christians would be forced to believe that Jesus is God, when he never claimed to be or taught that. You appeal to prohibitions mentioned in Deuteronomy, but I've noticed that most Christians break

Robert. Many of your suggestions here, like Eckists to voice loud defense, for example, are strong exaggerations. A small few may, but most are as you indicated, good folk. I feel for you and your demon experience at initiation, which sounds real. However, that surely is not the norm of members of Eckankar. Did you know that Bob is the most used name of serial killers in Florida? Would anyone believe all Bob's are serial killers, or have us believe that Bob who lives outside Florida is a serial too. This is the same false comprehension that is made about Eckankar, mostly by appealing to fear. What entity or person would work from that viewpoint? Think about it. What's wrong with daily contemplation? People do it naturally enough. No one has to do it every day in ECK, although it is advised as wise, that's all. It is a great thing, in my experience at least, it aids self-discipline and fundamental spiritual acceptance. And what's in a name. Probably quite a bit, but its' not everything. Jesus is a name, Mahanta is a name or word too. If you think this person writing is an agent of the beast or Kal (devil), come on, get real. Yes, there are levels of Eckists, and in all religions. There are many mansions (as Jesus said), and levels of heaven. Man is Soul, a spiritual being, and animals are Soul too, anyone can see they have a spirit in them, and all evolve spiritually as do we all. That is what is going on. Your echo of truth is greatly misleading. Example - Simha is not worshipped, nor hardly much mentioned. It is odd you point to such points at all. I am one who would say and to ask; cease and desist. Whyfore doest thou complain so? It's clear, this is your karma, not ours. ECK is for some, clearly not for you. To the others, I say, there may be a great good in ECK. For many it has been.
