Give space
Om mani peme hung. The literal translation of this mantra, as presented in Buddha & Love: Timeless wisdom for modern relationships by Lama Ole Nydahl, is: Space awaken! Diamond in the Lotus Flower (which is the name of Buddha and invokes his power) Be Strong! Through ones focus on Loving Eyes, whether a clear image is perceived or not, and the repetition of the six syllables of his mantra, minds compassionate qualities are awakened both in space and in ones self, the author assures. The repetition of the syllables also diminishes the concept of a separate I and creates more space for compassion to unfold. After the meditation, one can try to hold this state as long as possible in order to develop more and more compassion for all beings. A section titled Happiness is a question of ones attitude opens by stating that a couples inner attitude lays the foundation for every relationship. Whether the alliance will ultimately succeed or fail largely depends on to what degree one considers their partners happiness more important than ones own, the author explains. He notes that sooner or later, being continuously self-centred and tight will strangle every kind of happiness.

But if one manages to put the well-being and development of the partner before their own, then everyone wins. Even better, a couple can mutually grow by doing meaningful activities together. Importantly, the art of love lies in the ability to give ones partner space, the book reminds. True love, without sticky attachment, always has the taste of freedom Love succeeds when one isnt interested in controlling or limiting ones partner, but rather proudly enjoys the development of the couples inherent qualities: the power, beauty, and capabilities that both can joyfully radiate into the world. Underlining that a relationship should offer the possibility for self-chosen development, the author observes that if a couple stays together while doing so, then the connection is mature, and if they break up, but with understanding, they will be good friends again in future lives. He urges one to continuously check if one thinks more of the other person or more of ones own wishes. A big danger for new, deep relationships is when couples isolate themselves and avoid contact with the outside world, warns Nydahl. If the nights are already dedicated to one another, then days should be used to keep involved in the world and gain richness through the exchange with others. For contemplative absorption.
