It gives me a great sense ofsatisfaction and hope to introduceyou to this strategic plan for Bannerhousing association, which aimsto provide equality of housingoptions primarily for people with anintellectual disability in County Clare.Banner Housing Association LTD wasestablished in 2002 as a social housingprovider. The Association has beensteadily working at improving thehousing options available to peoplewith an intellectual disability in theClare region over the past number ofyears and to date has ensured thatall tenants of the Association have aplace they can call their own.Traditionally people with disabilitieslived in institutions and more recentlyin group-homes where they hadto share with other people with adisability. They often did not haveany choice of whom they lived withand usually had little in common witheach other. People generally had verylittle choice of where they lived andwhat type of accommodation theylived in.People with disabilities have beentelling us that they do not wantto live in groups, they want to liveand be part of the community, theywant choices of where to live andsupport to live in towns and villagesthroughout the county of Clare. Theywant housing that is accessible forwheelchairs so that people who haveto use a wheelchair can have access tohousing. This strategic plan, which has beendeveloped by the board and staff ofthe Housing Association, is an attemptto build a strong and effectivehousing organisation, which will meetthe dreams and wishes of its tenantsand potential tenants well into thefuture. It is my wish that this strategywill support the moves to supportpeople with an intellectual disabilityfind there rightful place in societyand ensure that in the future they willhave the opportunity of living a reallife in a real place.I want to thank all those who havebeen involved in developing this planand I look forward with great hopethat this strategy will strengthenBanner Housing Association to enablethe delivery of real housing optionsfor people with an intellectualdisability in the future.Eamon FinnChairman, Banner Housing Association
