Step 1: Spare some time
Be prepared to spend a few hours to solve the issue. Call ananimal shelter and ask if they’llaccept the animal that you’re go-ing to rescue. The law says theanimal needs to be given to a reg-istered animal NGO for rehabil-itation. Request them to send anambulance. If an ambulance isunavailable, hire a vehicle de-pending on the species andtransport the animal to the shel-ter.
Step 2: Call 100
Call the police control roomnumber 100 and inform themabout the cruelty and the loca-tion. The control room will tellthe police patrol vehicle from thenearest station to rush to thespot. Normally the police willcome within five minutes. Withtheir help, rescue the animal. Al- ways have two copies of the fol-lowing law sections related toanimals in your vehicle.* PCA, 1960 - Section 11 (Pre-vention of Cruelty to Animals Act)* The Madras City Police Act,1988* The Towns Nuisance Act 1889* Wildlife Protection Act, 1972* IPC (Indian Penal Code) sec-tion 428 and 429: IPC sections areused if the criminal is trying tocruelly kill an animalTell the police that animal cru-elty is violation of these laws andan FIR needs to be registered.Give them a copy of these laws ( You can buy the book “AnimalLaws of India” from Sitaramanand Co, Ph: 2811 1516). In case of  wild animal issues inform the CF(Conservator of Forests) of thedistrict.
Step 3: FIR
Please do not come out of thestation after just writing a com-plaint in the police dairy. Thecase will move to courts only if anF.I.R. is available. Write a com-plaint on a white sheet of paper. The police will prepare an F.I.Rbased on your complaint and willmention the relevant law sectionsgiven by you. The police have tosign and seal (using rubberstamp) the FIR and give you acopy.
What happens next?
The accused is arrested and re-manded. The police will providethe FIR and case documents tothe court. The court will call theaccused for hearing. A publicprosecutor (representing govt.) will present the case on behalf of the animals. Please provide allrelevant law and earlier animalcase judgment copies to publicprosecutors. If any individual/NGO is perso-nally interested, they can also filea legal case against the accused.

asavi Sundaram is yourgirl next door pursuing her third year Biotech at Anna University withdreams and ambitions likeany other girl her age. But what makes her different isthat her brainchild, iScribe, today has around 950 volun-teers registered as scribes –sensitising everyone aboutthe needs of the visually chal-lenged.iScribe is an online plat-form that acts as meeting place for those who need ascribe as well as those who want to volunteer. Launchedon September 5, 2007 in part-nership with NGO Vidya Sa-gar, the website is raring to goplaces. Vasavi’s initiative re-cently got her selected for aseed grant for the ‘Staples Youth Social EntrepreneurCompetition’ organised by Changemakers, an initiativeof Ashoka – a global organisa-tion that promotes social en-trepreneurship.
Defining moment
It was during Vasavi’s Class XII Board examinations that arequest came on the need fora scribe. “I agreed, partly be-cause I couldn’t say ‘no’ andalso because it came from afriend,” she recalls writing MA (History) for a visually-im-paired teacher after finishing her exam in the morning. “Ilike seeing a neat paper andthat’s the best I could give tothe candidate whom I had tolisten and simply write.”The day turned out to berather hectic for Vasavi as twoother students were left with-out a scribe in the exam. “I was tired after writing four ex-ams a day but satisfied that Icould help,” she says on how it’s a pleasure being a scribe. In all during the vacations Vasavi had scribed for over 10persons, and that’s when sherealised the need to “connectthe requirement to volun-teers”. Vasavi is quite candid whenshe says that the iScribe mod-el was inspired by an Internetblood bank and her observa-tion to connect both volun-teers and people. In her journey so far Vasavi has beensupported by her father, whokept ferrying her down fromonce centre to the other, andthe various people who havetheir own problems yet man-age the website.Maheshwari Narasimhan, for example, has multiplepsoriasis but works full-timeas a volunteer, taking care of the functional aspect of iScribe. Others including Deepti and Rajiv lend theirsupport through their littleacts.
Plans upfront
iScribe plans to expand itsbase to other cities. “We arealso going to institutions ask-ing them to get on to the data-base, where they can use thedata to find scribe for theirneed,” says the 20-year-old who is also active with Rash-triya Life Saving Society. Vasavi isn’t asking peopleto scribe. “We need people who are aware of the chal-lenges and can come to termsbefore signing up.”
