arshavenonethelessresponded byplacingtheirchildrenina privateschoolorbyeducat ingthemathome.Infact,homeschooling hasmushroomedinjustoveradecadefrom arelativelysmallcounter-culturephenomenonintoavibrantmainstreammovementconsistingofhundredsofthousandsoffami liesandoveronemillionchildren. Althoughthepresentmeltdown
of
thepubliceducationsystemiswellknown,theunderlyingreasonsbehindthedevastationarenot.Tounderstandthosereasons,itis necessarytolookbeyondtheclassroomto theattackonthefamilyingeneralandpar ents'rightsinparticular.Inthefinalanaly sis,statecontroloftheeducationsystem raisesnotonlythequestionofwhoshall teach,butwhoshallhavestewardshipover thechild-theparentsorthestate. AccordingtotheJudeo-Christianethic,the familyisthemostfundamentalsocialunitof civilization,andisentrustedbyGodwiththe awesomeresponsibilityofbringingupthechild. Untilrelativelyrecently,thatviewwasupheld bythelawsandthecourtsofthiscountry. Acontraryview,
embraced
bystatiststhroughouthistory,isthatthestateis

biological
familyis merelyanadministrativeunitthatderiveswhateverauthorityitpossessesfrom,and

Next,wereviewhowthestateisat temptingtosupplantthefamilybyacquir ingevenmorecontroloverwhatistaught, byconsolidatinggovernmenteducationand laborpolicies,byratifyingthe

interventionist"RightsoftheChild"convention, andbyswingingthedoorwideopenforstateintrusionintothehomeitself. Finally,wemakethecasethatchildren cannotobtainasoundeducationwithoutbeingtaughtaboutGodandHislaws,thatsuch aneducationcannotbeprovidedbyagov ernmentschoolsystemderivingitsincome fromtaxpayersofdisparatereligiousbeliefs, andthatthewaytocorrectthedamagenow beingdonebytheschoolsistoseparate schoolandstate. Aftercarefullyreadingtheevidenceas sembledherein,wehopeyouwillagreethat thereisagranddesignbehindthefailingsof thepublicschoolsystem,andthatyouwill helptoexposeandopposethatplot. -G
