The NCAA tournament is a single elimination college basketball tournamentthat decides the national champion. All Division I schools are eligible toparticipate in the tournament, but the field of sixty-five teams is chosen witha combination of automatic berths for some conference champions and at-large berths chosen by the NCAA selection committee. The criteria forselection in the NCAA tournament at-large bid includes winning percentage,strength of schedule, RPI data and other factors such as key injuries.
 
Often called March Madness, the tournament is one of the most watchedevents of the sports year, and is referred to as the Big Dance, which juxtaposes the tournament against the NIT, which has become less and lessrelevant over the years.
 
The NCAA tournament was started in 1939 and thrives on underdog teamswinning unexpected games. Underdogs that win in the tournament are
nicknamed ‘Cinderellas’ and a lot of fanfare surrounds how far a ‘Cinderella’ 
team can advance in the tournament.
