Intimacy is dangerous. One great casualty of the post-modern era is intimacy in worksof higher art; especially intimacy like we see here, where the angles and composition suggestnot only intimacy but “duende.” Moving beyond the rote quiddities of theinnocence/experience binary, notice how the female subject seems not only to be seducing butorgasmically receiving the intrusion of the lens into her personal space. The miniature, ratherdainty little cross she’s wearing (aligned in a pure vertical line with her face and head) makesexplicit that the carnal for her has at least a touch of the godly in it; and a touch of sanctitymakes her aura more adorable. The evidence suggests that Jeremy took this picture in theSouth Jersey Philly suburbs where he was raised— for this South Jersey, inverse-Madonna tobecome an international carnality-signifier, all you have to do is look, and she knows that.She’s Catholic, as was Jeremy’s taste.
