To: Kim Powers <kpowers11@gmail.com>Purple People Eaters:(The annoying little brother of The Blob)Hello one and hello all, and welcome back to another edition of Pop! Goes the Culture. Whaaaa anissue of Pop! actually coming out on Friday?! Okay, so maybe it's not coming out at its regularlyscheduled time, but hey, work with me here, alright? Before we get started, I'd like to make a confession. I was listening to the radio this week when AlienAnt Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal came on. As I was listening, I thought "Hmm...you know what? This song really isn't that bad." And then my second thought was "wait a minute, you LOVED thissong when it was released."That made me think, and realize, that like the "seven stages of grief", there is a similar model in placefor Top 40-popular songs, which I've divided into the following:Stage 1 - Love. Song is released and you, like so many other people, fall in love with the song. Youdon't care how much it is being played on the radio/at the mall/at the skating rink - it's like, your favoritesong.Stage 2 - Breaking Point. Anywhere from 2 days-6 months after the song is released. You are SO over the song. Why does my mom know all the lyrics to it?Stage 3 - 5th Grade Dismissal. Also know as "too cool for school". This is usually when a song isfeatured in a blog or a crappy reality show. You eye roll whenever the song comes on thinking howway superior your musical tastes are.Stage 4 - Irony. Usually seen at themed parties and on Girl Talk albums. Coupled with lines such as"OMG this song! Ahaha remember when we used to like this and spend our Friday nights at the mall?"Stage 5 - Absence. Wha? Who? If it doesn't have T-Pain in it, I ain't listening.
