Cover design by Kate Zackary.● The 55th annual NAIA Wrestling NationalChampionships is making its first visit to Des Moines, marking the 34th site to host the event. The NAIAWrestling National Championships have traveled to 19states, from coast-to-coast, in its history.● Des Moines will have 322 individuals representing 35teams descend upon the Jacobson Exhibition Center.● Of the 322 qualifiers, 95 are freshmen, 78 aresophomores, 73 are juniors and 76 are seniors.● Four national champions will be in action, two of which will attempt to defend their titles from a year ago, while two aim to return to the top of the podium.Great Falls’ (Mont.) senior Anthony Varnell owns a 24-3record and is the reigning 141-pound champ. Three-time All-American, two-time finalist Evan Hinebauchof Montana State-Northern (31-9) will be gunning for asecond-consecutive title.● In 2010, Southern Oregon’s Mitchell Lofstedt took tophonors at 125 pounds after a runner-up finish in 2009. After missing last season, he has racked up a 34-2record in his return and is looking to wrestling his way to the championship bout once again.● Tommy Pretty of Campbellsville (Ky.) won a title at 133 pounds as a sophomore in 2010 and bounced up to 141pounds as a junior, taking third place. At 24-7, the two-time All-American is seeking to close out his career as atwo-time national champion.● Twenty-six qualifiers are returning All-Americans, headlined by Hinebauch of Montana State-Northern as the onlythree-time honoree. Six grapplers have twice earned the distinction. Prior to the 2011 National Championships, first through sixth-place finishers earned All-America accolades, while a seventh- or eighth-place finish was anhonorable mention. Wrestlers taking first through eighth were named All-Americans for the first time in 2011.● Teams can have as many as 14 grapplers qualify for the National Championships, 12 of which are competitorswith two alternates. If two wrestlers at the same weight from the same team were to meet during the tournament, and the bout results in a major decision, technical fall or pin, bonus points will not be awarded towards the teamscore.● There have been 18 programs that have previously taken home the team title. Former NAIA members AdamsState (Colo.) and Central State (Okla.) each took home eight, the most in 54 years. Of the current NAIA programs,Montana State-Northern leads the way with six national championships, with the last coming in 2004.● In 54 years, 107 programs have had an individual finish on top of the podium. Simon Fraser (B.C.) has hadthe most wrestlers finish at the top of their respective weight class, with 40 national champions. Montana State-Northern is a distant second with 30.● The largest margin of victory in the team race came in 1981 with Central State taking top honors with an 85.75point cushion on runner-up Adams State’s (Colo.) 69.5 points. On the flip side, Lock Haven State (Pa.) edgedBloomsburg State (Pa.) by one point in 1963, 61-60, for the closest team finish. In 1994, Southern Oregon andWestern Montana tied for top-honors with 94.5 points. It is the only time the title has been shared.
