Mashiach in the Talmud 
Sanhedrin 96b-97a
“Rav Nachman asked R. Yitzchak: Have you heard when Bar Nafli [Son of theFallen One] will come? He said to him: Who is Bar Nafli? He said to him:Mashiach. Do you call Mashiach Bar Nafli? He answered him: Yes, for it iswritten, On that day I will establish the sukkah of David that is fallen [Am 9:11,

Sanhedrin 97a-97b
 “The academy of Eliyahu [Elijah] taught the following Baraita: The world is[destined to exist for] six thousand years. Two thousand of nothingness, twothousand of Torah [in contrast with the preceding two thousand], two thousand[should have been] the days of the Mashiach. But because of our sins, which arenumerous, [the years] that have gone from [the Messianic era] have gone.”
Sanhedrin 98a
 “And R. Yochanan said: Ben David will come only in a generation that is entirelyvirtuous or entirely guilty. In a generation that is entirely virtuous, [as it is written],And your people are all righteous, they shall inherit the land forever [Is 60:21]. Ina generation that is entirely guilty, as it is written, He saw that there was no manand He was amazed that there was no intercessor [Is 59:16]”(See Matthew 22:42-45.)“R. Alexandri said: R. Yehoshua ben Levi noted a contradiction: it is written [Is60:22], ‘in its time’ [which implies that the redemption will occur in its preordainedtime]. But it is written, ‘I will hasten it’ [which implies that He will bring theredemption before its preordained time. R. Yehoshua resolved this contraction asfollows:] If they are deserving, ‘I will hasten it.’ If they are not deserving, [theredemption will come] ‘in its time.’”(See 2 Peter 3:12.)“R. Alexandri said: R. Yehoshua ben Levi noted a contradiction: It is written, ‘Andbehold! With the clouds of Heaven, one like a man came’ [Dan 7:13]. But it iswritten, ‘a humble man, riding on a donkey’ [Zech 9:9]. If they are deserving, then‘with the clouds of Heaven,’ if they are not deserving, ‘a humble man, riding on adonkey.’”“R. Yehoshua ben Levi met Elijah who was standing at the entrance of the caveof R. Shimon ben Yochai. He asked him, Will I enter the World to Come? Heanswered him, If Master wishes it. R. Yehoshua ben Levi said, I saw two peoplebut I heard the voice of three. He asked him, When will Mashiach come? Heanswered him, Go and ask him. And where is he sitting? At the gate of the city.And what is his distinguishing feature? He is sitting among paupers afflicted withdisease. All of them untie and tie [their bandages] at the same time. He unties
