An orthographic tradition unites the finds of exquisite artistic forms at Begram,
Khandagiri, Udayagiri, Kankali Tila, Bharhut and Sanchi. The most characteristic feature
of this orthographic tradition is the use of \u2018ligaturing\u2019 technique to create composite
hieroglyphs.
The objective of the assemblage of art history and language resources is to unravel the
meanings of these hieroglyphs which can be read as mlecchita vikalpa, i.e. alternative
writing system representation of underlying mleccha lingua franca \u2013 mlecchita vikalpa
which is a writing system tradition that dates back to the Sarasvati civilization of circa 4th
millennium BCE where the \u2018ligaturing\u2019 technique was evidenced in hundreds of
