Walks Planning Day
16 November 2008Twelve Club members attended the Walks Planning Day andBBQ at Dave Kenrick's house. Dark clouds and rain forced themeeting to be held under shelter in the garage but luckily the bigstorm that hit Brisbane spared us at Holland Park.Maps and brochures on walks in the National Parks and forestsnear Brisbane were available. Members were able to browsethrough them to get inspiration for possible walks. This was followed by a BBQ enjoyed by all. Many thanks toLynne Kenrick for being the perfect hostess, supplying thedrinks and munchies for the hungry hordes.
Grant Acknowledgement
Recently QBW applied for a grant to seek funding in order topurchase 5 of the newer PLB's to replace our current oneswhich will become obsolete in February 2009. The “ImprovingSafe Walking in the Bush” project aimed to build on a successfulgrant application by the Club to the Gambling CommunityBenefit Fund back in 2005.QBW is happy to announce that the application was successful.
The project was proudly funded by the QueenslandGovernment's Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
QBW has purchased 5 PLB's from the $2,700 grant money plus$300 out of its own funds. The PLB's purchased are the GMEMT410 with inbuilt GPS.
PLB's
There was some discussion at the November QBW committeemeeting on how the PLB's would be made available tomembers. Finally the following motion was agreed on:"At least 3 PLB's are to be available for Club walks/pre-outingsat all times.Up to 2 PLB's may be made available to members for non-Clubwalks provided such allocation does not prevent a PLB beingtaken on a Club activity where a PLB is necessary or requestedby a Leader for a Club walk."The PLB's will be made available at the Club meetings. ContactRichard at 3341 7509 for more information.

Rough-scaled snake seen in the Border Ranges
The Rough-scaled snake (Tropidechis carinatus) is usuallygreenish brown with dark bands on the back. Its length is about0.7 m to 1 m.It is also called the Clarence River snake and is found in isolatedpockets along the coast of Queensland and northern New SouthWales. It is usually found close to water and is active during theday, feeding on frogs and mice. The scales have raised longitudinal ridges forming prominentand distinctive keels down the body, hence the name rough-scaled snake. The Rough-scaled snake is considered to be aggressive andmay strike rapidly when provoked. Several fatalities haveoccurred as a result of envenomation by this species. It is sometimes mistaken for the harmless keel back snake(Tropidechis mairii). The moral of the story is to leave all snakes alone. Don't betyour life that it's a harmless snake!Page 2 of 8
