BIBLE READINGSFOR THE WEEK
ST. JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY
– (March 19
th
)
Although we know little about St. Joseph, what we doknow shows what extraordinary trust was placed in him as theguardian of Mary and Jesus. Because of his role in the HolyFamily he is the patron of families. Outwardly there wasnothing unusual about Joseph’s daily life, and so manyCatholics can identify with his ordinary labors as a carpenterand his devoted care for his family. We know that he was astrong man, a pure man, a prayerful man, and a wise one.Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus’ public life, at Hisdeath, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph probablyhad dies before Jesus entered public ministry. Joseph is the patron of the dying because, assuming hedied before Jesus’ public life, he died with Jesus & Mary close tohim, the way we all would like to leave this earth. Joseph is also patron of the universal Church, fathers,carpenters, & social justice.We celebrate two feast days for Joseph: March 19
th
for Joseph the Husband of Mary and May 1
st
for Joseph the Worker. There is much we wish we could know about Joseph –where and when he was born, how he spent his days, when andhow he died. But Scripture has left us with the most importantknowledge: who he was – “a righteous man” (Matthew 1:18)
Prayer:Saint Joseph, patron of the universal Church, watchover the Church as carefully as you watched over Jesus,help protect it and guide it as you did with youradopted son.Amen

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED
If you remember just one thing from today’sGospel, remember this: You are God’s temple, so takecare of it. Just as Jesus cleared the Templeof allcorrupting influences, so too does He want to cleanseus. Just as He was zealous for His Father’s house, sotoo is He zealous of each of us – for we are all templesof His Holy Spirit.But lets put this story in perspective.Remember how encouraging and supportive Jesus isthroughout the Gospel. Remember how much Heloves you. Know, too, that He intercedes for you everyday. Jesus is zealous for us in His passionate love, andthere are times when His passion is directed againstthe sin in us – and that’s where we get the phrase the“wrath of God.” Jesus wants us to be clear: We mar this beautifultemple of our lives when we allow sin to overtake us.Whenever sin rules us in this way, our temple gets alittle more darkened, and that upsets Jesus. Of course,His anger is against our sinful behavior, not againstour hearts. But it is a passionate anger, and it’ssomething none of us ever wants to experience.So let’s choose never to cause the Lord to beangry with us. Let’s make sure that Jesus is first in ourlives. Let’s make sure that we do not let any sin enterour lives and defile our “temple.” When we fail, let’shave the courage and humility to repent and bereconciled with the Lord. In short, let’s do everythingwe can to make the temple of our hearts as pure andholy as possible.Let’s also pray for the courage to evangelize. There are many people in the world who arecorrupting their own temples. It’s up to us to reachout to them – beginning with our families and friends –helping them to get right with God so that they can
