THE SOG AD THE SOIL
OR, THE MISSIOARY IDEAI THE OLD TESTAMETBy Prof. W. G. JORDA, D.D.GEERAL PREFACETHE title of the present series is a sufficientindication of its purpose. Few preachers,or congregations, will face the long coursesof expository lectures which characterisedthe preaching of the past, but there is agrowing conviction on the part of somethat an occasional short course, of six oreight connected studies on one definitetheme, is a necessity of their mental andministerial life. It is at this point the pro- jected series would strike in. It wouldsuggest to those who are mapping out ascheme of work for the future a variety of subjects which might possibly be utilised inthis way.The appeal, however, will not be restrictedto ministers or preachers. The variousvolumes will meet the needs of laymen andSunday School teachers who are interestediiGeneral Prefacein a scholarly but also practical expositionof Bible history and doctrine. In the handsof office-bearers and mission-workers the" Short Course Series " may easily becomeone of the most convenient and valuableof Bible helps.

It need scarcely be added that while aneffort has been made to secure, as far aspossible, a general uniformity in the scopeand character of the series, the final re-sponsibility for the special interpretationsand opinions introduced into the separatevolumes, rests entirely with the individualcontributors.A detailed list of the authors and theirsubjects will be found at the close of eachvolume.TABLE OF COTETSPAGEI. THE FIAL FESTIVAL (Isaiah xxv. 6-8) . 1 19vn" BY the missionary thought in the Old Testament is tobe understood the faith that in the future the wholeearth will come to the knowledge of Jehovah's gloryand all peoples pray unto Him. The missionary thoughtlies altogether at the circumference not in the centre of the Old Testament. It has definite prophetic thoughtsas its presupposition and reaches its highest point at atime when the prophetic movement lies already in thepast ; but the opposition in which it stands to theparticularism of the Law and the Jewish abhorrenceof all things heathenish never allowed it to reach apractical significance." Professor MAX LOHR.VlllI.THE SOG AD THE SOIL.PSALM CXXXVII.THIS cry " How can we sing the Lord'ssong in a strange land ? " came from thedeep places of the human soul ; it waswrung out of the hearts of men who werein great pain ; it comes as an apology forsolemn silence and tells the story of a lostsong. In an exposition our first duty is torevert to the original and restore to the textthe personal name of Israel's God. " Howcan we sing Jehovah's song in a foreign
