The Clogheravaun excavation site was situated 1 km from the centre of Kiltullagh. It was excavated in advance of the N6 by Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd on behalf of Ministerial Direction A024/E2056; NGR 157692/224124; Height OD 33.5 m
A chert scraper, small polished stone axe and a small quantity of 18 th and 19 th century pottery was recovered from the topsoil during testing, and the site was divided into six areas designated B, C, F, G, H & I. Area B consisted of five 15 m by 1.8 m trenches excavated across a shallow, east/west orientated shallow bank at the foot of an esker, interpreted as a natural accumulation of colluvial deposit. Area C was located over a burnt mound, 11m by 12m with a maximum depth of 0.20 m. Area F comprised a series of 12 hand-dug 1 m by 1 m test trenches, excavated adjacent to a potential river crossing, but failed to find any archaeological artefacts or features. There were 6 trenches excavated in Area G excavated across a linear bank. The bank consisted of naturally accumulated colluvial subsoil. A series of hand-dug 1 m by 1 m test pits was excavated in Area H across upstanding ridge and furrow cultivation remnants. The final area to be excavated was Area I, excavated on the south side of the river, and consisted of a number of test trenches across a V-shaped ditch interpreted as a drainage feature.
