This report presents the results of archaeological investigations carried o ut on behalf of
Galway County Council pri or to the commencement of construction on the N6 G alway to
Ballinasloe Scheme. The w ork was undertaken under Ministerial Direction num ber A024/24,
registration number E2063 , in the townland of Brus k, Co. Galway. The Minist er for the
Environment, Heritage &am p; Local Government, foll owing consultation with t he National
Museum of Ireland, direct ed that Brendon Wilkins o f Headland Archaeology Lt d should
proceed with Phase II Exc avation.
Contract 2 pre‐constructi on testing on this site i n 2005 was alerted to the possible high
archaeological potential of the location by an arc haeological geophysical s urvey carried out
(ArchaeoPhysica 2004). Te sting was able to confirm the presence of three br ick kilns, a
potential well and an are a of in situ burning.
Full archaeological excav ation was conducted on th is site during May 2006. The three brick
kilns were exposed, excav ated and identified as cl amp kilns, single‐use str uctures often
constructed close to both the raw material and the building for which they were intended.
The clamp kilns may refle ct relatively small‐scale use of the site. It is s uggested that the kilns
were not fired on the sam e occasion owing to a dev elopment in the construct ion techniques
observable between the th ree kilns. Other potentia l features, including the possible well and
the in‐situ burning were investigated and found to be a natural feature and the result of recent
field clearance activity respectively.
