This report presents the results of archaeological investigations carried o ut on behalf of Galway
County Council as part of Contract 2 archaeologica l investigations prior to the commencement of
construction on the N6 Ga lway to Ballinasloe Schem e. The work was undertake n under
ministerial direction num ber A024/2, in the townla nd of Newford, Co. Galway . The Minister for
the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, following consultation wi th the National
Museum of Ireland, direct ed that Brendon Wilkins o f Headland Archaeology Lt d should proceed
with Phase II full manual investigation.
Contract 2 pre‐constructi on testing under minister ial direction number A024 /2 on this site in 2005
identified two separate a reas of archaeological po tential on the basis of n egative cut features and
associated in situ burnin g visible in the base of test trenches. Limited in vestigation of these
features confirmed their status as archaeological, and these separate areas were subsequently
designated Area A and Are a B with recommendations for full excavation of al l features to
ascertain the character, significance and extent o f archaeological deposits .
Full archaeological inves tigation was conducted on this site in February 20 06. This revealed a
Bronze Age funerary pyre with possible cremation c emetery and associated st ructural and
marker post‐holes in Area A. In Area B a Bronze Ag e burnt mound and associa ted trough were
revealed.
