Introduction:

“We’ve been learning about immigration in general and focusing on the Irish
Immigration during the mid-1800’s. I hope you have some sense of what it must have
been like for these people to leave their homes, families, and friends behind as well as
the struggles and sacrifices many faced as they made the journey. So, now they’ve
made it to America. All their troubles are over, right? Or have they just traded one set
of problems for another? Today you’re going to be working your way through learning
centers where you will hopefully get a taste of what these immigrants went through as
they became “strangers in a strange land”.

Procedure:

1. Break class into four groups and ask them to come up with a group name that has to
do with immigration.
2. Explain that the groups will be rotating through a series of four learning centers
where they will be given a task to complete. There will be a 3-minute period for them to
write about their experiences in-between each center. This will be done in a prepared
journal made ahead of time by the teacher. Each child should put her/his group and
individual name on the journal at the first center they go to in order to avoid confusion
with other students.
3. Each group will have approximately fifteen minutes at each center to complete the
given tasks. (two centers will be completed each day)
4. As stated in #2, each child will reflect on the completed activities in the prepared
journals.
5. At the conclusion of the lesson, children will reconfigure into different groups and
share experiences. From this sharing, each group will come up with three statements
they feel could express what it must be like to be a “stranger in a strange land”. These
will be displayed on our immigration bulletin board along with any other appropriate
work from the various centers.

Assessment:
~Students’ understanding will be assessed based on their journal reflections and the
group conclusions.
Extension activity:
1. Students may wish to continue learning to speak Irish and/or using the Usborne quick
links to improve their use of the language.
2. Students may make a graph representing the information gathered during the “Tasty
Treats” task.
